The Sunday Salon: Winter Woes

It's been one of those weeks...

  • snowstorm
  • ice buildup on roof
  • leaking roof
  • pots and pans catch leaks
  • roofers remove snow/ice
  • repeat

Snow totals have topped 130" this season and, to no one's surprise, Syracuse has been declared the snowiest city on the continent.  Enough already!

Last week's reading amounted to a grand total of 50 pages.  I started our next book club selection, Waiting for Columbus by Thomas Trofimuk, and am not quite sure what to make of it yet. Book bloggers are nearly unanimous in their love for this novel, so I'm willing to give it more time. Especially since I've been more than a little distracted...

After another cup of coffee, I'm heading out with the roof rake to remove more snow. Later there will be a Super Bowl Party at my sister's. I like football, but am not a huge fan of either team, so this year the commercials are the main draw!

Hope you stay warm and dry this Super Bowl Sunday.

  1. I hope you end up enjoying Waiting for Columbus! I started the audio about a year ago and just hated the reader so much I had to stop. I may pick it up again sometime in print, since I don't think it was the book I disliked!

For a long time, I only watched the Super Bowl for the commercials. I'm now a football watcher, but none of my teams made it this year (or ever make it, actually!). Luckily, my least favorite team, the Steelers, is playing, so I'm rooting for Green Bay by default! Have fun!

  2. I haven't read this one, but I've certainly been seeing it around...

This week, I read a book that had major hype, and I waited quite awhile to plunge into it. When I got it for my Kindle, I finally had to read it. And I'm not sorry.

For more, here's my SUNDAY SALON

  3. What an awful week to have...I hope the next one is a better one:) No football for me...I'll be hiding in a corner with Oliver Twist and some chips and dip.

  4. What a drag! You certainly do not sound your usual chipper self. Hope that winter comes to an abrupt end for you soon as the groundhog said and that your current read suddenly grabs you. Happy reading!

  5. I've had Waiting for Columbus on my TBR list forever now. I can't wait to read your thoughts on it.

Have a great time at the Super Bowl gathering.

  6. You sound well and truly fed up and so am I! I look like the Midas Muffler man with all my winter gear on.

Hang in there, JoAnn, we've almost made it. Have a 'super' day with your family and friends!

  7. Hope you can avoid any more water thru the roof. My parents had to have carpets, parts of walls and furniture replaced after they got an ice dam on their roof last year that sent water inside. Such a pain! Don't hurt yourself out using that roof rake!

  8. I hope I never have need to own a roof rake. Ugh. (Although moving to Pittsburgh might necessitate one.)

Hope spring comes soon for you guys!

  9. I just found out today that we'll be entertaining another couple tonight for Superbowl. Was looking forward to pulling out the laptop and drafting up some posts for the week but now feel to awkward to. :(

Geez--hope you guys thaw out, but I'm guessing you're a long ways from spring? We dealt with frozen laundry pipes all weekend (and the ensuing flood when they started to thaw), so I don't evny your roof leaks. :(

Um, never heard of Waiting for Columbus (that I can think of). Back under my rock I go...

  10. Good luck with your roof rake, JoAnn. I'm afraid to tell you that after our little snow on Friday morning, it's all gone and the temp right now is 73. My husband is out on the golf course. Spring will come - one day. :-(

  11. Erin - Columbus will get better once I sit and concentrate on it for more than 5 minutes at a time. It's strange being so neutral for the Super Bowl, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the game anyway.

Laurel-Rain Snow - Glad to hear the hype was worth it... off to see what book you mean :-)

Stacy - Hope you and Oliver enjoy the game ;-)

Frances - Feeling a little cranky today, guess it can't help but come through. Looking forward to some quiet time with my book!

Vasilly - I think I'll like it more once I can sit down and read uninterrupted for more than 15 minutes.

Darlene - Thanks... didn't mean to sound quite so cranky this morning :-)

Lisa - I managed the roof raking without injury... more contractors coming tomorrow to see what we can do.

Melissa - I'm guessing they have occasional need for roof rakes in Pittsburg... it's quite a workout!

Trish - Oh well, so much for those post-writing plans. Fizzy Jill first brought Columbus to my attention, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it once I get into it. Last year we had a really early spring... feels like we're gonna pay for it this year.

Kay - The roof raking was fine, but now I'm ready for a nap (or a big mug of coffee!). I'm thinking 70 degrees is a couple of months away for us.

  14. Girl, I truly do feel for you. You need to meander on down here my way, and run around in shorts and lay by the pool. As for the Super Bowl, it is all about the appetizers, the commercials, and the betting pools.

  15. I am so sorry for all your snow trouble. That is just plainly, too much snow! I hope you can escape your troubles for a little bit while you get lost in your book. If it makes you feel any better, your woes help me not feel so cranky about our weather today!

  16. Man, that was quite a storm you had. I hope you finally have time to sit down, relax and read.

  17. Oh JoAnn --- I have nothing to complain about! 130 inches?! I simply cannot fathom that much snow.

I hope you were able to enjoy the bowl party and escape the reality of the winter blues for a short while.

Here's to the ground hog not seeing his shadow and spring being just around the corner!

  18. I need a Roof Rake especially for the ice buildup!! I've not heard of Waiting for columbus...I must live under a rock. Hope it picks up for you and that your area can go one week without snow!!

  19. JoAnn...you sing a familiar winter tale of woe. Everyone is talking about the same thing around here. Fortunately we got a new roof and new gutters last year, and although a lot of snow still sits on our roof -- so far so good. Hope you get relief from this mess soon.

As for Waiting for Columbus -- this book was not for me:( good luck

  20. Vivienne - There is snow in the forecast every day this week :-(

Sandy - Sadly, no Florida until April for us. I'm with you on the Super Bowl!

Kim - Only a little escape yesterday, but the Super Bowl was a welcome diversion.

Molly - Even though I really didn't care about the outcome, we really enjoyed the Super Bowl. Now I'm betting on the ground hog :-)

Staci - The roof rake makes it easier to remove snow... no ladder needed! I only made it through 10 more pages of Columbus. If I don;t get into it today, I'll DNF it.

Diane - Was able to get our contractor her this AM to remove the rest of the ice. Hope things are under control for the time being. I'm thinking Columbus may not be for me either.

  21. I've read mixed reviews of Waiting for Columbus. I was going to pitch it to my book club but worried that there wouldn't be enough to discuss. Looking forward to your opinion on it.

  22. Ti - I've read almost 100 pages and am still trying to get the point, but just heard from another member that's half way through and loves it. It will be an interesting meeting!

  23. Here's hoping for a better week ... maybe even a warmer one!

  24. Amused - It's below zero now, but we're looking at a thaw this weekend... can't wait!
