Quote of the Week: The Easter Parade

"She believes in marriage, you see. She said to me once 'I was a virgin when I got married and I've been a virgin ever since.' Isn't that the damnedest statement you've ever heard?"

  1. I loved this book so much, JoAnn! Richard Yates had such a unique voice. I will get around to the final two books of his I haven't read this year. This has reminded me how much I love his writing!

  2. Oh, my, I love that quote! I haven't heard of him, so thanks!

(Kim Bee here -- I'm following under my only blog now. Needed to consolidate and trim down. With 6 other writers joining me, there should be more books, too. Hope you will keep in touch.)

  7. Rachel - I know I will be reading more of his work! The collected stories are on the shelf, but I'm not sure which novel to choose next.

Viv - This is a VERY real novel... no sugar coating.

Kim - I saw that you were changing blogs. Will look for you at Georgia Girls.

Joan Hunter Dunn - Hope you can find it. I love Yates writing.

Sandy - He's the guy that wrote Revolutionary Road, but the name may not be familiar.

Carolsnotebook - You should. He has a keen perspective on 'real life'.

Staci - His writing is very real, and not exactly uplifting, but I really like it.

DS - Hope you get to Yates eventually. I know it's frustrating... there are so many authors I want to try, and the list just keeps getting longer.

  11. So far, I've only read Revolutionary Road, which had such an impact on me, that when I heard about The Easter Parade (from your blog!), I had to order it right away. It just came in the mail yesterday. I'm drooling here, eager to read it, but there are others I must read first! Sigh....

  13. I love this quote! As someone who's never read anything by Yates before, is there one book in particularly I should start with first?

  14. Vasilly - Isn't that a great quote? I love it, too. I listened to Revolutionary Road a couple of years ago and loved it. That seems to be his most well-known novel, but The Easter Parade was great, too. I'll definitely be reading more.
