Sanibel Sunday: Easter Edition 4/21/19

Happy Easter from Sanibel! It's been another busy week with a couple of social events, three  trips to the Apple store, and a hair appointment... in addition to my regular routine. The GOOD news is that my computer, a five-year-old MacBook Air, has been repaired and updated at no charge, but the BAD news is that I don't seem to be able to leave comments on blogger blogs! I'm signed into my blogger/google account, then I visit your blogs and try to comment, I'm prompted me to sign in again, but it won't let me. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Finished this week//

byJoan Biskupic, narrated by Carrington MacDuffie

I read (and loved!) Sotomayor's memoir, My Beloved World, a few years ago and found Breaking In to overlap quite a bit. However, the memoir ended as Sotomayor was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by George W. Bush in 1991. This book covers her judicial career (through its 2014 publication) as well as the politics surrounding appointments and advancement. The audio was well done and the book enhanced my understanding of the many behind-the-scenes maneuvers involved in judicial appointments. It's well worth a read. I'll post a Book Brief soon.

Current reading//

The Past by Tessa Hadley

I'm not making a lot of progress on this book, but really like it just the same. Tessa Hadley's writing is wonderful and the premise is right up my alley - an extended family gathers at their old country home/estate for what may be the last time before it's sold. The story is unfolding at a leisurely pace now, but I'm sure there will be plenty of secrets and maybe even a scandal or two ahead!

Listening to//

by Oyinkan Braithwaite, narrated by Adepero Oduye

This is one weird story!! I started listening on my walk yesterday evening and am not sure where this one is going. BUT... it's gotten positive reviews from trusted bloggers, I like the narration, and it's short. The audio is just over four hours, so I'm on board.

On the blog//

Book Brief: Burial Rites  by Hannah Kent

In the kitchen//

Nothing too exciting this week. We ate a lot of salads since many of the Publix kits were buy one, get one free. I bought a rotisserie chicken to add a little more protein.

For a midweek neighborhood gathering, I made these Ham and Cheese Pastry Pinwheels. They were good, maybe a little bland, but I was glad to try something different. They disappeared quickly.

My father-in-law is coming over for Easter dinner a little later. In addition to the traditional ham and side dishes, I'm going to try this Simple Sesame Asparagus. We're having Blueberry Crumble Pie for dessert.

The week ahead//

Our "season" is winding down and the island is getting a little quieter. We're having friends for cocktails one night, meeting another couple for dinner later in the week, and have one end-of-season reception to attend... a little more socializing than I'd like, but we won't see most of these people again until fall.

I'm starting to consider our route north... maybe stops in Savannah (or possibly Charleston) and then somewhere around DC. We'll see what my husband has planned.

How was your week? What have you been reading?

**4/23 Update:  I installed google chrome and the problem is solved... for now!

  1. Glad your computer has been reparted and updated. I'm sorry about your commenting problems. I don't think for my blog that you need a Blogger account. You just can leave your name, e-mail (that I don't save), and your blog address. So just to catch me up again? You spend six months there and six months in upstate New York? As for me, this week was up and down, but getting better. Plan was to read today, but so far...not happening. Hopefully later or tomorrow.

    1. Bryan - I've had no luck commenting from Apple products. Testing my daughter's PC now... fingers crossed.

  2. You had better luck with your five-year-old Mac than I did with my seven-year-old Mac. I was told I needed to get a new battery and a new hd. I decided to forego it. I have a new Mac I got a year ago, but I was hoping to get the old one going for my husband. No such luck.

I've been having trouble for some months with commenting. I've tried a variety of things. I cannot comment now (I once could) on blogs using my iPad or iPhone. Safari seems to work fine on my Mac, though sometimes I have trouble with Wordpress accounts. I wish I knew what was going on.

    1. Deb - I think I probably still need a new Mac. Mine still isn't working quite right :(

  3. Happy Easter! I think the commenting problem might be with the operating system - Chrome might work for you.

I've seen all those good reviews for My Sister, The Serial Killer and would like to give it a try.

    1. Kathy - I'm going to try and install Chrome. Hope that takes care of it...

  4. All the commenting problems I'm seeing and hearing about...they must be related to some underlying issues. So far, Google Chrome is working for me.

Your Florida retreat is reminding me of the Sunset Beach book I'm now reading. Loving it.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  5. Happy Easter! I hope you had a wonderful weekend, JoAnn. I am sorry to hear about your commenting problems. Someone else I visited today mentioned having trouble commenting on their Mac on Blogger blogs. I wish I knew why that was. I am glad you have a working computer again though.

I keep seeing My Sister, the Serial Killer mentioned on blogs. I guess I had better see what it's all about!

    Enjoy your week!

    1. Wendy - I'm still not having any luck commenting from Apple products.. using my daughter's PC for a few minutes until she asks for it back! My Sister, the Serial Killer is surprising me. It's better than I was expecting.

  6. Clearing the cache and cookies seemed to help me with commenting, others have switched to using the chrome browser which seems to work. It seems clear it’s a recent glitch, hopefully blogger will do something about it soon.

    Have a great reading week.

  8. HOpe your Easter was great! Grrr on the commenting problems. So far, I've been spared (I'm using Firefox on a PC though). Echoing others: I guess I'd better check out My Sister, the Serial Killer. I like the idea that it's only 4 hours!

    1. Beth F - We had a such an enjoyable evening with my father-in-law. Today I have some split pea soup with ham in the slow cooker and am figuring out what to do with the rest of the leftovers. Commenting doesn't seem to be a problem using my daughter's PC... though she isn't very happy with that situation ;-)

  9. Happy Easter! It was a gorgeous one here on the Texas coast. I'm reading your post before breakfast, and the pinwheels look extra delicious :)

I have no idea why Blogger would be so difficult. For some reason it must not be recognizing you when you try to comment.

  10. I continue to read about other people having problems with blogger...I just put every blog I read on Wordpress and that helped...I can comment through email, too....it must be blogger. After all of my complaining I had a relaxing Easter Sunday. We were going to cook filets and asparagus but at the end of the day we weren’t hungry enough to eat anything so we are having that today. I loved the Tessa Hadley book, too but it seemed to take a really long time to read!

    1. Patty - I'm sure you'll enjoy that delicious dinner even more today when you're hungry! The Past is a wonderful book, but it's taking me a surprising amount of time to read it. Still no fix for the commenting... just borrowed my daughter's PC for a few minutes and that seems to work.

Have you ever been to Mount Vernon? I really enjoyed touring both the house and the grounds when I visited.

    1. Audrey - We haven't been to Mount Vernon in a long time... I think they were building the new visitor center at the time. This would be the perfect opportunity to see it completed! Thanks for the suggestion.

  13. With the blogger issues, I would say clear your browser cache. You can google how to do it for whatever browser you are using (Safari, Chrome, etc.). You can also try a different browser just to see if that's really the issue.

It would not be surprising to me at all if I ended up retired and living on Sanibel because your photos always make it look so lovely.

    1. Ti - I tried Google Chrome and now I can comment again, so I guess the problem was Safari. We can start a book club when you retire here - hooray!!

  14. Ugh. I hate it when I have problems commenting on blogs. I still find yours in my comment moderation folder on Blogger. Not sure why I never get an email notification for yours, but I always check since I love to hear from you. :)

Goodness, you are becoming very knowledgeable about the judicial system, aren't you? I hope to read My Beloved World in the next few months. It's one that has always been on my radar, but until I buy it, I tend to forget about it. Thanks for the reminder!

I've not heard of The Past, but the premise sounds right up my alley!

Are you ready to head back north or is it bittersweet? Your time on Sanibel seems to go so quickly, at least to me! Any big road trips in your future? We're having a lovely time exploring some new and familiar spots in Oregon and on the Olympic Peninsula. The three weeks out will fly by, but we're hoping to squeeze in another week out sometime in May. Then we'll be home until another two month trip down to San Diego and back.

Currently reading Nanaville by Anna Quindlen, which is quick and light, but meaningful. Next up, Erica Bauermeister's latest. The Scent Keeper. I may just curl up in a camp chair tomorrow and read between gazing at the water. :)

    1. Les - Commenting with blogger has been so frustrating! There are 3 or 4 people whose comments regularly appear in my moderation (or spam) folders, but I never get email notification. That must be what's happening with my comments to you, too. I try to remember to check it every day or two.

This is looking like another Supreme Court streak for me... it's fascinating! I was actually hoping to find Biskupic's new book about John Roberts. That was checked out, but I discovered Breaking In instead. Well worth a read (or listen) but My Beloved World should be higher on your list.

The Past is a very slow-moving novel, but it's well-written and my kind of story. I like it even if it's taking forever to read it!

I know it's "time" to head north, but I'm not ready to leave Sanibel yet. That may be a different story when we get a heat wave with oppressive humidity! I do miss my parents and siblings though... I'm torn. It's probably time for us to rethink housing - big place in NY that's mostly empty and small place here where we're spending more and more time!

Loving the photos from your current road trip... such beautiful country! We're considering starting our next road trip in San Diego (haven't been there since the 80s!) and ending with another visit to my BIL &SIL in Santa Fe. We'll see if we can make it happen this fall.

Need to add Nanaville to my list.... Quindlen is the best!

    2. If we wind up in San Diego at the same time this fall, we HAVE to find a time to get together for lunch, dinner or drinks!

  15. JoAnn,
How interesting that Google Chrome solved your problem--interesting??? I wonder if it might be sad to see your season on the island end. Bittersweet at the least, I'm sure. Nothing like those long walks on the beach, though. I would miss those.
I really loved The Past. Something about that family house in the country just grabbed me.

    1. Judith - Installing Google Chrome just solved the problem for another blogger, too, who was using Safari on an Apple product. Now I wonder if the problem is an Apple glitch. Season is winding down even more now, and it's definitely bittersweet. Hoping to finish The Past today... so good!

  16. I too liked My Beloved World by Sotomayor, and the audio of My Sister the Serial Killer which is different but fresh too. I didn't realize it was just 4 hours. Hmm. Charleston would be a great place to visit on your trip north. Enjoy!

    1. Susan - We've visited Charleston a couple of time before and like it a lot... just a little less convenient than Savannah. It slightly too far for us to get there in one day. Thinking about staying put through Memorial Day now :)
