The Sunday Salon, Monday Edition

Good morning. Is it Monday already? Thanks to a quick trip to NYC, our weekend flew. We left Friday afternoon and drove into the city. I usually prefer the train but, with a car full of necessities for Daughter #1, it wasn't an option this time. We arrived in time for a late dinner at a favorite restaurant, after which tired parents were ready for sleep, while twenty-something daughter headed uptown for a party. Saturday was spent walking, engaging in touristy activities, shopping, and eating. Sunday morning we headed upstate for a visit/brunch with Twin A and her boyfriend, and arrived home just in time to ransom an anxious greyhound from the kennel. And now it's Monday.

Believe it or not, I actually finished two books last week. Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple was just plain fun, and I loved The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers: An Unconventional Memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell on audio. A road trip to Sharon Springs is definitely in order, but in the meantime I'll preview The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook from the library. It may be a book I need to own.

Yesterday I started The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë and am looking forward to picking it up again later today... definitely a good sign.

I hope your week is off to a good start.

  1. I'm a fan of Wildfell Hall. Wonderful and wild book. I kind of enjoyed The Bucolic Plague but I don't really understand why it's getting so much attention lately. I thought, good but not that good, myself.

    1. C.B. James - Wildfell Hall IS wonderful and wild, and I've barely started... such a surprising book. I'm loving every page. The Bucolic Plague appeals to me for two reasons. First, it's practically a local story (1 1/2 hours away) and second, I love the audio production. It gives even more intimacy to the story!

  4. Sounds like a fantastic weekend!!! I must read Bernadette and I already have The Bucolic Plague on hold request from my library. I can't wait to read your thoughts on the Bronte book. I own this one too but of course, I haven't made time to actually read it!

    1. Staci - Once you get used to the narrator, The Bucolic Plague is totally wonderful! I want to clear out the backyard shed and put in a few goats now ;-)

  5. I envy your trip to NYC!

I've been meaning to read Wildfell Hall for so long, and still it sits on the TBR shelves. Maybe you will inspire me :) I picked up The Bucolic Plague from the library this weekend & am looking forward to it.

    1. Lisa May - If the first 75 pages are any indication, Wildfell Hall is going to be an excellent read! Hope you enjoy The Bucolic Plague, too.

    1. Ti - Reading Josh and Brent's story was even more fun because of the local aspect. Just picked up the Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook from the library, too!

  9. Oh, a weekend trip to New York sounds like so much fun right now! I don't think they have kennels for 2 year olds though (haha, that's what grandparents are for :)).

    1. Stacybuckeye - Haha! When the girls were younger, we often speculated on whether the kennels would take 2 year olds. Thank God for grandparents :-)
