Booking Through Thursday - Recent Best

Today's question:

What’s the best book you’ve read recently?
(Tell me you didn’t see this one coming?)

My answer:
by Richard Russo

Are you getting tired of me mentioning this book yet? This may be the third time it's been pictured here in the last week! I could have finished it Sunday, but have slowed down to make it last longer. Russo has been a favorite for years, and his new book only reaffirms that status.

A passage from last night's reading:
"Dear God, not Williams," she told Laura. "Do you know the kind of people who send their progeny to Williams? Rich. Privileged. White. Republican. Or, even worse, people who aspire to all that." Not unlike your other grandparents, she meant. "Their kids aren't smart enough to get into an Ivy but have to go somewhere, so God created Williams." (page 182)

  2. I agree. If someone is enthusiastic about a book, I'm willing to give it a go. Here's mine. Cheers!

  3. I've got this one on my TBR list, too. Don't you love it when a book is so good, you don't want it to end?

  4. Nope, not getting tired. In fact, that reminds me to put it in my TBR pile!

  5. I know just what you mean! With all the best of, funniest and other superlatives, I'm starting to feel like a book pusher, promoting the same books over and over again :)

It was hard for me to pick just one, so I did a top five :) Here's my BTT.

  8. Well, if you love it, you've got to share the love with everyone else. Adding to my TBR list - because if you love it that much, it must be good!

  9. I've heard great things about Russo, but have yet to read any of his.

  10. Okay, you have convinced me. You must have some willpower to slow down on a book to savor it. I have tried pacing myself on a really good book but later it will haunt me and I can't help myself and have to pick it up.

  14. Thank you all for commenting. Maybe my enthusiasm is contagious! I'll be leaving for vacation soon, so may not get the review up before the end of the month...but it will be coming.

Diane - That quote had me laughing out loud! Had to read it to my husband and daughter, too. I could just picture his mother saying that!

  16. I haven't read Russo for years since Straight Man. I've got Empire Falls on the shelf for years but I haven't had the call to read it. Since since you're so enthusiastic about That Old Cape Magic, I'll have to check it out since I trust your reading taste!

  17. Anthonynorth - Russo is a favorite of mine. Hope you get to read him at some point.

Matt - Empire Falls was fantastic - my first introduction to Russo. That Old Cape Magic does have a backdrop of academia, but not as prominent as the setting of Straight Man. Hope you can read more Russo one day...and I certainly trust your reading taste, too!
