Nonfiction November is Almost Here!

Good news, fellow readers... Nonfiction November starts in just a couple of weeks! This year there are five hosts and five weeks of blog prompts:

Week 1: (November 1-5) – Your Year in Nonfiction with Rennie at What’s Nonfiction: Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions – What was your favorite nonfiction read of the year? Do you have a particular topic you’ve been attracted to more this year? What nonfiction book have you recommended the most? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

Week 2: (November 8-12) – Book Pairing  with Katie at Doing Dewey: This week, pair up a nonfiction book with a fiction title. It can be a “If you loved this book, read this!” or just two titles that you think would go well together. Maybe it’s a historical novel and you’d like to get the real history by reading a nonfiction version of the story.

Week 3: (November 15-19) – Be/Ask/Become the Expert with Veronica at The Thousand Book Project: Three ways to join in this week! You can either share 3 or more books on a single topic that you have read and can recommend (be the expert), you can put the call out for good nonfiction on a specific topic that you have been dying to read (ask the expert), or you can create your own list of books on a topic that you’d like to read (become the expert).

Week 4: (November 22-26) – Stranger Than Fiction with Christopher at Plucked from the Stacks: This week we’re focusing on all the great nonfiction books that *almost* don’t seem real. A sports biography involving overcoming massive obstacles, a profile on a bizarre scam, a look into the natural wonders in our world—basically, if it makes your jaw drop, you can highlight it for this week’s topic.

Week 5: (November 29-December 3) — New to My TBR with Jaymi at The OC Book Girl: It’s been a month full of amazing nonfiction books! Which ones have made it onto your TBR? Be sure to link back to the original blogger who posted about that book!

I love this event and have participated for years. This week I'm starting to get my book list together... and have already found that there are way too many choices! One thing I've always appreciated about Nonfiction November is that you can participate at whatever level your schedule allows, one week or all five. Nonfiction reviews can be posted at any time and linked with current week's host.

Do you ever read nonfiction? Will you be participating in Nonfiction November?

  1. I thought I had joined a Nonfiction November a time or two but it wasn't like this. It was just a challenge to read nonfiction books and link back to the host. But, I can't find a challenge like that so now I'm just going to do it on my own.

    1. Vicki - This still might be it. You can choose to do the prompt or not, but you also link reviews for nonfiction titles to the weekly host.

    2. Yeah, we didn't emphasize this in the announcement, but we'll have a link-up every week for the discussion post and for any nonfiction reviews you post that month. Really, however you want to participate is awesome :)

  2. I am so glad you're participating, too, and can't wait to see what nonfiction you choose to read!

    1. Helen - I'm already having trouble narrowing my list of nonfiction titles down to something manageable!

  5. Good luck! I'll be reading nonfiction all November, but I probably won't have time to get the blog posts done, so I'll be unofficially participating.

  6. I just may participate this year! I have been reading a fair amount of non-fiction this year, and I have a couple of stacks (thanks to the generous lending of my siblings) to choose from.

I really like the prompts and am looking forward to finding new gems from other bloggers.

Btw, one of the stacks I have is devoted to code breaking during WWII as my brother knows of my interest!

    1. JaneGS - I can't wait to see what's in the code breaking stack. That's a subject I'd like to read more about!

My nonfiction reading percentage is actually down this year. I started so strong in the winter and spring, but enjoyed mostly fiction all summer and into the fall.

Hope you decide to join in!

    1. Tina - The topics are very similar to previous years. I just love reading all the posts and add SO many books to my tbr list.

  8. Looks like lots of funs with all those interesting topics to tackle. My nonfiction is really down this year...I think maybe 20 titles of more than 100 I've read...so I would struggle to do much with the challenge. Maybe next year, though.

    1. Sam - A few years ago I read over 40% nonfiction, but the percentage has been slipping for the past couple of years. Even if you don't participate, the posts and reviews are worth reading. I add so many books to my tbr... enough to last an entire year!

  11. I'm so excited about Nonfiction November. I don't read a lot of nonfiction so this is always a good reminder. I already have some possible reads so I'm looking forward to it. Can't wait to see what you read!

    1. Iliana - I think my nonfiction reading was down a little this year, but I do love it. NN gives me a whole month to concentrate on it!

  12. It seems my nonfiction has been low this year but I like to read it generally. I will try to gear for Nonfiction November .... goodness knows I have plenty of memoirs that need to be read. The Billie Jean King autobiography I bought recently. There's a big pile of them.

    1. Susan - I haven't figured it out yet, but have a feeling my nonfiction numbers are lower this year, too. Will be curious to see which memoirs, in addition to Billie Jean King, you choose to read next month.

  13. I just tallied up my nonfiction reads thus far and was amazed to see it's exactly half of my reading (28 books). I like that there is a new topic post this year -- nonfiction that doesn't seem real. That should be a fun one!

    1. That's great, Melissa! I was running 40-45% nonfiction the last several years, but think it's down this year. Will figure that out soon.

  14. Oh praise be!!!! This is the NonFicNovember I've been waiting for and wondering if it was going to happen or not! The only one I could find was the one ABookOlive does, and I'm sure hers is great but THIS is the one I participate in every year. So happy it's back again this year! Thanks for linking us up to our hosts.

  15. I'm such a book nerd. We're heading home tomorrow from our 2+ week road trip and all I can think about it putting together my list for this challenge! Forget unpacking the RV, doing laundry, going grocery shopping, etc. I want to make stacks of books and create my collage. :) I know I have about a dozen books on my shelf that will fit the bill, but I also know that I'll only finish maybe 3-4 since it is November, after all. Thanksgiving planning, hosting, cooking, etc., will dominate a full week. It's all fun, though. Can't wait to see your selections!

    1. Les - This just cracks me up and I completely get it, too! I'll be lucky to finish 3 or 4 books in November. We just got word that one daughter (plus boyfriend) is coming for a long weekend over Veterans Day and the other is coming for 10 days around Thanksgiving with the new boyfriend. Gotta love remote work, but it's going to cut into my reading time!

  16. I participated in Nonfiction November for the first time last year and my TBR grew a ridiculous amount. I hadn't seen the announcement for this year's plans so I'll start working on my posts. Thanks for the heads up!

    1. Jen - My favorite part of Nonfiction November is adding titles to my TBR to last an entire year... or longer. So glad it'll be back again!

    1. Katie - I'm so glad Nonfiction November happening again! Last year we were in the process of moving, so I missed it. The event always grows my tbr... more than enough for an entire year! Thanks for hosting again.
