Happy New Year! For the sixth year, Sheila at Book Journey is hosting the First Book of the Year event. The idea is simple - just share a photo of you and your first book. Sheila says:
Year 6. I LOVE First book so much. This tradition for me goes further back than the 6 years I have opened up to the reading world here on Book Journey. I am THRILLED to be doing it again and thank you to those who have messaged me to ask if I will be doing it again. The answer
Of course we are doing it.
My life has changed a bit – I may not be blogging as steady as I used to and I have moved to a more diverse site where I can share other things beyond books – check me out at I Guess I Am Doing This (also a work in process… but I am not giving up ;P )
Here is what First Book is. The first book of the New Year should be:
A. A coveted book that you have wanted to read but have just not found the time.
B. A delicious favorite… one you have read before, but crave to read again.
C. Really whatever you want it to – it is after all YOUR First Book Of the year.
Make it AWESOME.
This year I have selected Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Life by Jane Sherron De Hart...
"...fifteen years in work, written with the cooperation of Ruth Bader Ginsburg herself and based on many interviews with the justice, her husband, her children, her friends, and her associates."
The book was a Christmas present from my daughter. I also used an audible credit to make it a read/listen combination... at 750+pages and just over 24 hours, this may take a while!
Have you chosen your First Book of the Year?
First Book of the Year 2018
First Book of the Year 2017
First Book of the Year 2016
That should be an inspiring choice for your first book of 2019. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deb. It's excellent so far.
DeleteDeb makes a good point--RBG is one of the most inspiring women of our time. I like the idea of reading/listening. It really enhances the experience. Enjoy it and have a wonderful new year!
ReplyDeleteCatherine - This is such a long book, so I especially love the read/listen combo.
DeleteGreat pick, JoAnn! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Angela!
DeleteHappy New Year JoAnn! Enjoy your first book. I hope RBG gets well.
ReplyDeletePat - Me, too!!
DeleteGreat picture! You look wonderful! Happy new year, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Audrey. Happy New Year!
DeleteThis is a must read for me! Happy New Year, JoAnn! And happy reading!
ReplyDeleteRobin - It's very good so far!
DeleteI bet that's a good one! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteKathy - It's great so far.
DeleteGreat choice! I just added it to my list. Enjoy, and thanks for sharing. Here's my FIRST BOOK OF 2019
ReplyDeleteLaurel-Rain Snow - This is a much read for any RBG fan!
DeleteGreat idea to read and listen. Happy reading and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteNise' - Happy New Year to you, too!
DeleteHappy new year & happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jade!
DeleteHappy New Year! What a wonderful choice and a very cute picture. Hope you have a fantastic year and looking forward to reading about your adventures.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Iliana!
DeleteJoAnn, hope you enjoy the book. Yes, I love read/listen combos and this one seems like a good book to use that method. Your picture is great!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kay!
DeleteHi JoAnn,
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely listening to an audio of an RBG book. Is it true you've read more than one? Do you have one you'd recommend to read first?
And, by the way, a wonderful photo! Happy reading
Judith - I loved Notorious RBG. So far it seems that this is a more basic and much shorter bio, with fun graphics. There is also a dual biography of Sandra Day O'Connor and RBG titled Sisters In Law... an interesting structure, but what was the most surprising was how women of such different backgrounds ended up in the same place - The Supreme Court! This book seems the most comprehensive. Very enjoyable so far!
DeleteI want to read this one as well. I can't get enough of sweet, smart, savvy RBG! Hope you love it. Love the pic.
ReplyDeleteDiane - RBG is my hero! The book is great so far.
DeleteAhhh! Perfect pick for the new year! I think I'd also go for that read/listen combo with a book that length.
ReplyDeleteAndi - This is the kind of book read/listen combos were made for!!
DeleteAnything RBG is a great choice! Loved the docu movie too of RBG! I picked up James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk ... which is short and potent! wow the power of Baldwin was just perfect for the year's first book. Happy 2019.
ReplyDeleteSusan - Just love RBG... such an impressive woman! The documentary was excellent and I'm looking forward to the new film, On the Basis of Sex, too. I need to read James Baldwin soon. Happy New Year!
DeleteI can't wait to hear your thoughts on this one!
ReplyDeleteStacy - It's a dense book, but so readable. RBG is an amazing woman!
DeleteThanks, Vicki. It's very good so far.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice, JoAnn! I may have to get it on Audible when I get my next credit. She is a remarkable woman!
ReplyDeleteLes - This is such an inspiring read. RBG is a national treasure!
DeleteGood one!
ReplyDeleteHarvee - It really is!
DeleteA biogrophy of Ruth Bater Ginberg sounds like a great start for the year. I would like to read this myself. I guess that I just make my first book whatever I happen to be reading at the New Year. As I will shortly be finished with the forth Harry Potter book that will likely be the one.
ReplyDeleteBrian - That's exactly how I used to start a new year until I discovered Sheila's event. Sometimes that puts too much pressure on selecting just the right book, but this year's choice is a winner!
DeleteThe salmon recipe had me copying it. We get great fresh salmon here so might try it. I've put 4 books on my Jan 2019 good reads I've finished. Latest being Aussie Tim Winton's The Shepherds Hut. Really enjoyed the audible. Great book. 🤠🐧
ReplyDeletePam -I'd love to try Tim Winton one of these days... not quite sure where to start? Hope you enjoy the salmon as much as we did.
