Six in Six: 2016 Edition

It's time for Six in Six again! Jo at The Book Jotter  created this meme several years ago. The purpose is to help to summarize six months of reading by sorting books into six categories. Choose from the ones Jo suggests or come up with your own... and it's okay to use the same book in multiple categories.

Six new-to-me authors:
1. Thrity Umrigar - The Story Hour
2. Garth Risk Hallberg - City on Fire
3. Paolo Giordano - Like Family
4. Graham Swift - Mothering Sunday
5. Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney - The Nest
6.  Helen Ellis - American Housewife: Stories

Six  tried-and-true  authors:
1. Henry James - What Maisie Knew
2. Anna Quindlen - Miller's Valley
3. Elena Ferrante - The Days of Abandonment
4. Julie Mulhern - Clouds in My Coffee
5. Ann Leary - The Children
6. Herman Koch - Summer House with Swimming Pool

Six from the nonfiction shelf:
1. The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan
2. Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer
3. Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon
4.When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
5. Kings of Queens: Life Beyond Baseball with '86 Mets by Erik Sherman
6. West With the Night by Beryl Markham

Six read/listen combinations:
1. City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg
2. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
3. Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell
4. Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo
5. Circling the Sun by Paula McLain
6. What Maisie Knew by Henry James

Six five-star ratings:
1. Mothering Sunday by Graham Swift
2. Miller's Valley by Anna Quindlen
3. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
4. The Children Act by Ian McEwan
5. Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo (audio)
6. Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson (audio)

Six books I plan to read before 2016 ends:
1. Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty
2. Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo
3. Amsterdam by Ian McEwan
4. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
5. They May Not Mean To, But They Do by Cathleen Schine

  1. I tried to do this, after seeing Jane's list, and kept only co :ming up with fives! So I'll just admire your list (and hers) again and add some of these to my list. :)

    1. Audrey - LOL! Maybe you should do a Five in Five... and then you only need 5 categories, too ;-)

  2. Wow - I don't think I'd have 6 books for some of these categories! And I'm looking forward to the new Amor Towles as well!

    1. Sarah - I'm sure you would be able to come up with six in other categories... like debut novels ;-)

  3. I've got to get to Mothering Sunday!

  4. Nice post! I'm wondering if you left some titles off your lists, or did you really have exactly 6 for each category :) Must've been fun to write because you get to reflect on your recent past reads. I need to get to When Breath Becomes Air when I'm in the right mood for it.

    1. Rita - No, I left some off in most of the categories. But this really is a fun way to think about what I've read so far this year. Last year I was able to do 6 books in translation, but I could only come up with four this time. You're smart to save When Breath Becomes Air for the right time... I was a mess reading that one.

  5. I see some I've read, and some I want to read.
How have I not seen Six In Six before?

    1. Vicki - This really is a fun meme, but not as popular as some others. I can't figure out how I missed 2014!

  6. I love this meme! I have Henry James and Anne Leary on my TBR so I'm pleased to see that they're on your tried and true list. And Julie Mulhern! I love her books. I have A Gentleman in Moscow on my 2016 list as well. It sounds fascinating.

    1. Katherine - Yes, Henry James is on my tries and true list, but he still require a little extra patience and understanding ;-) Can't wait for Julie Mulhern's next book and I'm counting the days until A Gentleman in Moscow is released.

  7. Oh, my goodness. I'm so impressed. I don't think I could place six books in each category, but I think it would be fun to try. I might join you on this meme. I like this one.

    1. Kathy - With all the books you read, I'm sure you could come up with six categories that might work... maybe one for debuts, one for thrillers, etc... Hope you join in!

  8. Funny how Julie Mulhern keeps pooping up ;-) It's a great series!

I've got The Nest on my bedside stack, and Be Frank with Me lined up at Scribd. I'm looking forward to them both.

P.S. I had no idea I could use a book for more than one category . . .

    1. Debbie - Using books in multiple categories makes this A LOT easier! Hope you like The Nest and Be Frank with Me, too. I think the audio for Be Frank with Me really made the experience.
