Sunday Update: Fall in CT and Wedding Week is Here!

Hello, friends. After nearly two months of rainy weekends, we finally got one that is at least mostly dry! The photo above was taken yesterday at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT and, as you can see, it's definitely fall! Today we'll visit Mystic Seaport, wander around some shops in the village, including a new favorite indie bookstore, and find a spot for a late lunch. There may even be an apple festival nearby.

Recent reading//
My two most recent print books are both set in Maine. That wasn't exactly planned, but I love Maine and cannot resist that setting. Both were great reads!

The Road to Dalton by Shannon Bowring
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pete and Alice in Maine by Caitlin Shetterly
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Recent listening//

by Sandra Cisneros, narrated by the author

This 1984 classic is just under 2 1/2 hours on audio. It's told as a series of vignettes featuring a young Latina girl, Esperanza Cordero, growing up in Chicago. The author's narration adds to the impact and beauty of these stories. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Current reading//

The Ensemble by Aja Gabel

This is the November selection for the MMD Book Club. I'm just past the halfway mark and enjoying it very much as a read/listen combination.

The week ahead//
Wedding week is here and we are all so excited! Our daughter is getting married in NYC on Saturday, so there won't be much time for reading or blogging. I'll check in again in early November with a monthly wrap-up. See you then...

How was your week? What have you been reading?

The Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz.
It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date.

Thank you for sharing these books. All of them except Mango Street were new-to-me. They look great.

  3. Oooh, beautiful photo of those fall colors! That bookstore in Mystic looks inviting, too.

Both Maine books are on my TBR list, as well as the Cisneros classic. I've never read anything by her, but have always eye'd The House on Mango Street. I'm glad to hear that the audio is worthwhile.

Best wishes to your daughter and future son-in-law. Enjoy the celebrations this week!

    1. Les - We had an excellent day in Mystic (brunch, bookstore, a couple of shops) and then walked all along the Niantic Bay boardwalk... coastal CT is really beautiful in the fall!

I read a lot of the books my girls were assigned in school but, even though I was sure it would, The House on Mango Street never came up. Glad to finally read it.

Can't believe Wedding Week is finally here!!

  5. Fall in CT looks gorgeous! Love indie bookstores and an apple festival sounds fun! We have had loads of apples from our trees and I canned a bunch of apple pie filling. I'll be making apple pie this next weekend. Maine is beautiful! I've only been once, but would love to go back. Hope you enjoy the wedding!

  10. I love the looks of the area you are in, the Fall colors are magnificent. I think I would like to read Pete and Alice in Maine, great review. Have you read Jodi Picoult's book Wish You Were Here? That's another pandemic novel I liked.

How exciting it's wedding time! Congrats to your daughter and I hope you post a few photos.

    1. Tina - Fall is so beautiful here! One big improvement over the Syracuse area is that there is next to no snow near the coast... but hopefully there won't be any before we head back to FL. I have Wish You Were Here on my kindle and am looking forward to reading it. I'll definitely post some photos after the wedding. (Did you leave instagram?)

  13. I am hoping the clouds overhead mean the area I live in will get some rain soon. But I am glad you were able to enjoy some dry weather for a change this weekend. Maine is a great setting for books, I've found. Maybe someday I'll even get a chance to visit! Congratulations to your daughter! It's such an exciting time for her and for your family! Take care and have a great week!

    1. Wendy - I sure hope you get some rain soon. This has been a wet summer and fall, so last weekend's sunshine seemed like such a treat. Maine is one of my favorite places, but we haven't been there since before the pandemic. I'm hoping we can get back there in 2024. We are all so excited about the wedding!!

  18. I clicked around on the website of that Florence Griswold Museum and now I am dying to visit it! How cool that it used to be an artist colony! Imagine getting to stay there and just paint the day away. Not that I paint, mind you.
I would also like to eat at Cafe Flo. What a tasty menu they have and dining with a view of the river!

I look forward to hearing about your daughter's wedding in NYC! Only 3 more sleeps!
