An Adirondack Adventure

Another weekend, another adventure... this time in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. On Thursday the three of us from central NY and our Manhattan daughters gathered in Lake Placid.

Our oldest, a triathlete, travels to Lake Placid every summer for a training weekend. Due to race schedules and work commitments, she was not able to join her usual group this year. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for a family getaway, so we booked a condo and drove north for an "alternative" training weekend. While she did her swim, bike, and run, others of us walked, read, and shopped. Later we all gathered for the prime event - dinner!!

The girls drove back to NYC Sunday morning, while three of us continued on to Plattsburg for lunch, then Ausable Chasm  (the colorful specs in the lower right are people)...

before landing in Saratoga Springs for the night. Monday we visited some favorite spots in Saratoga,  toured the battlefield at Saratoga National Historic Park, and had a picnic overlooking the Hudson River.

We plan to stay put for the rest of the month, but who knows what adventures September will bring?

  3. Beautiful! I've never been to New York - any part of it. I think I'd like the parts you are showing better than NYC. LOL

  5. I love getaways like this--exploring your own backyard, so to speak. Really enjoyed your photos--would love to visit Ticonderoga--so much history and beauty.

    1. Susan - My husband grew up in the area, so we've been to the Saratoga battlefield many times over the years. Always something new to discover, too.

  11. Isn't retirement grand?! I so enjoy seeing your travel pictures and keep making notes of places I'd love to visit. While I don't run or swim anymore, I like your type of triathalon. Walking, reading, and shopping, sound perfect, but I'd also add biking to the mix.

    1. Les - Yep, I'm loving this retirement thing! R was sorry he didn't bring his bike, but it's SO hilly there. I only have a bike in Florida... where it is very flat!!

    1. Katherine - I'm quite sure any triathlon, other than my alternative version, would kill me! ;-)

  13. We went to Fort Ticonderoga back in the day when my parents hooked the popup tent camper to the station wagon and hauled us around the country for three weeks at a time. A lot of places started to blend together but I well remember Fort Ticonderoga.

    1. Lisa - We hadn't been to "Fort Ti" in 7 or 8 years and I was amazed at all the improvements. Your parents were very brave to haul kids around like that for weeks on end! My husband's family took trips like that in the west... mostly visiting "scenic wonders" as they used to say.

  15. Beautiful photos! I've been to all the locations you went to, but not recently. I was at that fort & chasm, but I was there when I was a child, only really remember it because my uncle had a bumper sticker about visiting there. The Adirondacks are a gorgeous place that I can recommend, same as you, to visitors. We went through that area, and stopped in Lake Placid for lunch, I think when we were traveling up to Maine when we lived in FL. Just lovely!

    1. Rita - There are so many beautiful things to see and do in the northeast... especially this time of year and into the fall. I'll bet you're especially glad to be back here when the leaves start changing. Won't be long now!
