July Reading Wrap -Up and A List of August Possibilities

It's August and still very much summer around here. We've had way too much heat and humidity (along with much of the country) punctuated by frequent thunderstorms. This past week our NYC daughter, son-in-law, and Winnie the Whippet have been here - their last visit before the baby arrives at the end of the month. Meanwhile our CT daughter and son-in-law are looking at an early October due date. It's going to be an exciting fall!

July highlights included spending the 4th with family, celebrating my birthday, a long weekend in  NYC, and a baby shower. July also turned out to be a very good reading month with a mix of new releases, a book club selection, and a classic. I enjoyed three new-to-me authors, plus a novel/memoir by an old favorite.

BOOKS READ IN JULY

New release, literary fiction, MMD book club selection,
my thoughts here, ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Departure(s) by Julian Barnes

Literary fiction that reads more like a memoir, purported final novel by a favorite author
My thoughts are here, ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Kin by Tayari Jones

new release literary fiction, new-to-me author
My thoughts are here,  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Daddy Long-Legs by Jean Webster

Classic, YA epistolary novel, from my shelves
My thoughts are here,  ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

ONGOING GROUP READ

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

The chapter-a-day slow read with Footnotes and Tangents continues. I'm loving this experience!

AUGUST READING POSSIBILITIES

I'm going all in for Austen in August this year!

The Annotated Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, David Shapard
(in progress)

The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow

Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley (nonfiction)

by Irena Smith (memoir)

How was your July? What was your favorite book?

  5. I like your Austen in August theme. My favorite book that I read in July was Tides Wait for No Witch, by Natalie Summers. She was a new-to-me author and it won't be the last book I read by her. :)

  6. You've got some great books ready for Austen in August. I especially want to try to read The Other Bennet Sister. I had it in my hands, but I had to send it back to the library before I got a chance to read it. Enjoy! I'm looking forward to the arrivals of the new grandbabies.

  8. Have you watched The Other Bennet Sister? It’s a lovely adaption. I also recommend Charlotte by Helen Moffat which imagined Charlotte Lucases future.
Thanks for sharing your week, happy reading!

  10. I'll bet you are just beyond excited about those future grandbabies! Do you know if they're boys or girls? Such a fun time for everyone.

Your reading month was very similar to mine with high rated books. Kin is high on my list but I probably won't get to it for a while. I think I'll go with the audio. Oh, and I FINALLY finished The Winds of War last night. Whoohoo! I wonder if the tv series is too dated to watch. Can't say I loved the book, but I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.

You August selections look like fun, especially the road trip one. My favorite in July was Whistler, of course. :)

    1. Les - We have one of each on the way... a boy in late/August early September and a girl in October!

Congratulations on finishing The Winds of War! That's quite an accomplishment. I remember loving the series back in the day, but can't imagine what it might be like to watch it now. I'll be curious to hear if you try it.

    1. Thank you, Kay. We're planning to spend most of September in NYC to help out. My husband has always wanted to live there, so we got a short-term furnished rental about a block away from our daughter for a month.

  12. Two babies in one fall, woohoo! Baby love. That is going to be very exciting. I agree that Kin was a great book ... and so well written. I hope you enjoy your Austen month. But what is Troika ... haven't seen that one. Cheers.

    1. Susan - Troika is the September Modern Mrs. Darcy book club selection. It looks like a road trip memoir with 3 generations of women that incorporates a lot of family history surrounding their immigration from Ukraine. Should be interesting, I hope!

I must have read this a few days ago and forgot to comment. Or hit publish. Hmmm...

    1. Tina - I've got Troika on audio, so we'll see how that goes. I'd never heard of it before book club selected it, but it's fairly short. Counting down the days now until baby #1 arrives!
