The View From Monday

With a nod to E.L. Konigsburg for the post title, our view this Monday seems even more disturbing in light of last Monday's 90 degree warmth and sunshine. The view is gradually improving as power has been restored and snow has turned to rain. Schools even opened after a two hour delay.

The weekend, however, was perfect. A cold, drizzly Saturday with no pressing commitments provided the perfect opportunity to finish Below Stairs, several letters in Clarissa, and still spend time with my husband and daughter. Sunday we saw Syracuse Opera's spectacular production of Madama Butterfly and had dinner with friends. Butterfly's Child, which imagines the life of her child in America, is now on my wish list. What's in your view this Monday?

  1. Wow, what a weather change. The snow looks beautiful though! And lucky you to see Madame Butterfly. The closest I ever came was a movie or two based on it - maybe Teahouse of the August Moon? Maybe Sayonara? Not sure now!

  2. I wondered about you guys when I heard there would be snow coming to the Northeast. The last blast of winter, I guess. We hit over 90 this weekend and are moving quickly into summer. Guess that's OK, but I sure wish we could get more rain first.

    1. Kay - I sure hope this is the last blast of winter - the weather has been so crazy his year! Hope you guys get some good rain before summer really sets in.

  3. Oh, my! I'm glad it didn't impact you too much. We're just getting the last lashings of windy rain here. And it's cold enough for (hot) tea. Perfect reading weather!

    1. Audrey - It made for a difficult morning, but things improved dramatically as the day progressed. My poor husband went to work without showering though... no heat or water for us when the power goes out!

  4. I really don't care for these wild fluctuations. We didn't get snow (I like my view but love yours:) but the cold and rain were very welcome. I wish it would stay a little longer but looks like we will be back to 70 on the weekend.

    1. Stacy - This has been the weirdest winter/spring ever! They're only predicting 50's for us this weekend... I was hoping for warmer weather for my niece's First Communion.

  5. Wow... I thought it's only we who get wacky weather! And I can see the green leaves are all out in your photo. We here in Calgary Alberta Canada are used to volatile temperatures, but would never get from 90 to snow. And oh, just wondering, have you started on Makioka Sisters yet? Do check out its film adaptation (Criterion Collection) after.

    1. Arti - I don't think anybody is avoiding the crazy weather this year! I'm about half way through the Makioka Sisters now. Put it aside for the past few weeks for Clarissa, book club selections, library books, and Agatha Christie, but now it's my main co-Clarissa read. I did add the movie to Netflix and will move it to the top as soon as I finish reading.

  7. The storm that gave you snow just gave us a lot of rain and now it is in the mid 70's. I just wanted to spin and dance and sing The Sound of Music-style in the yard today. This will probably be the last of the gorgeous weather for us!

  9. No way!! The weather this year has been so crazy. We've actually been a little bit cooler in Dallas (70s) and it's been really nice. With the mild winter, though, I fear for ALL of us--seems everyone has been unseasonably warm--minus your snow.

    1. Diane - That's definitely a comforting thought. We got our driveway plowed yesterday... poor guy hasn't made much money this year, so he didn't waste the opportunity ;-)

  13. Your photograph (clever title, by the way, for this post!) reminds me of Narnia as the Witch's spell on Winter is melting, and we see the promise of Spring.

Wish I could have seen the opera, I never have. If you'd like my copy of Butterfly's Child, email me and I'll mail it to you. It was wonderful, and probably something you 'should' read after being at the opera.

Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend...

    1. Gavin - Most of the snow has melted, but it looks like we'll have to wait until next week for spring to reemerge around here. The joys of central New York ...
