Teaser Tuesday - September 22

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Miz B at Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Here's how it works:
-grab your current read
-open to a random page
-share two teaser sentences from somewhere on the page (avoid spoilers!)
-be sure to include the title and author so other TT participants can add the book to their tbr list if they like your teaser
-leave a comment with your link at Should Be Reading

My teaser:

"The easy elegance of every movement of her limbs and body as soon as she began to advance from the far end of the room, set me in a flutter of expectation to see her face clearly. She left the window - and I said to myself, The lady is dark. She moved forward a few steps - and I said to myself, The lady is young. She approached nearer - and I said to myself (with a sense of surprise which words fail me to express), The lady is ugly!" (page 28)

by Wilkie Collins

  1. That would be a shock...is she a ghost?

  2. Great teaser, I would like to know more! My teaser is here: http://rundpinne.blogspot.com/2009/09/to-be-king-teaser-tuesdays.html

  3. Just read a review of this one. Looking forward to your thoughts!

  4. Hee, great teaser! I read The Woman in White last October and remember much being made of Marian being an ugly woman, as if women could not be both attractive and intelligent.

  5. Great tease! I think I'll take a look at this book. =)

  6. Hmmm...someone sounds a little shallow. I'll have to take a look at this one - excellent teaser.

    My teaser is here.

  7. Sounds rather funny... is it? Thanks

    Here is my TT:

  8. Ummm...wow! I vaguely remember hearing this title before. I am going to check into this book.
    Thanks for the teaser.

    Here is my Teaser Tuesday

  9. I just bought this in audio. Hope to get to it soon. Great teaser.

  10. Wilkie Colllins is such a good writer. What a surprise! Here's mine: http://bookbirddog.blogspot.com/2009/09/teaser-tuesday-art-of-meaningful-living.html

  11. At first read, I thought they might have been talking about a ghost or something, until they called the lady ugly. Hahaha!

My teaser is up at Find the Time to Read feel free to check it out :D

  12. What a wonderful teaser - isn't it interesting how our views of people and expectations can change?

    Here's my Teaser! ~ Wendi

  13. Wow, that is unexpected. Great teaser!
    Here's mine

  14. The writing sounds so great. My copy from Amazon arrived yesterday. Can't wait for your review.

  15. This is a wonderful teaser. Fluttering with expectation to find out she was most likely not what was expected!

  16. I have read The Woman in White by Collins. I don't remember these lines. Your teaser made me laugh. The poor lady is "ugly." I shouldn't laugh. I should feel sorry for her.(:

    My teaser is here.

  17. That last line kind of stops you...it is a great choice for a teaser.

  18. Well that's being a bit forward isn't it! Poor thing...

  19. I can see why it's so hard to post just two sentences, heh. It's pretty funny when it's all together, like that. I wouldn't have cut it apart either!

    My teaser is here: http://www.wellreadreviews.com/blog/?p=979

  20. Hmm very intriguing teaser! I'll have to look that book up.

On an unrelated note, I love the photo in your header. It reminds me of those perfect summer days, and the lake closest to me looks a lot like that

  21. Oh My! I was not expecting the last comment and I laughed out loud! I really want to read this book, I recently read raves about it on another blog!

Love the picture in your header, beauriful!

  22. Woah that last sentence seemed to come out of nowhere - and got a laugh out of me. Great teaser :)
    Here's my Teaser Tuesday.

  23. This one intimidates me!!! Great teaser!!

  24. Great teaser! I've had this one on my TBR list for years and years. Hope you're enjoying it.

  25. Oh man...I hate when that happens. The room must have been dark, not the lady!

I enjoy classics in the fall, so getting at one that has been on my shelf for two years: The Count--loved the movie.

  26. I love your teaser JoAnn! I really need to read The Woman in White.

  27. I'm reading this right now, and I remember that was the last thing I expected from that sentence!

  28. Hee hee. This has been on my list forever, checked out of the library once! Look forward to reading your thoughts on it.

  29. Poor Marian! I privately decided that she wasn't ugly in the least - it's just that Walter was dim and couldn't see beyond traditional Victorian delicate-damsel-in-distress beauty. His loss :P

  30. Nise' - Nope, she's real.

Jennifer - I'll be over to check your teaser soon...

Amy Reads Good Books - So far, it's really good.

Paperback Reader - Amazing how much he dwells on her looks...

    Becky - You should!

Lisa - I'm wondering if this is more an attitude of the times.

gahome2mom - So far, I wouldn't say it's a funny book, but I sure laughed at that passage!

ibeeeg - It's very good, and it seems like there are a lot of bloggers reading it right now.

Beth F - Looking forward to hearing what you think of the audio.

Book Bird Dog - I really like Collins. The Moonstone was fantastic!

Gautami - I do think you would like WIW.

Jess - This really made me laugh, too!

    Wendi B. - You're absolutely right.

    Andrea - thanks

Diane - This is a pretty long book, but I'm hoping to finish in another week.

Christine (booktumbling) - I'm pretty impressed with her so far...

Tea - That line really got me laughing to. I wasn't expecting it at all!

  31. Book Psmith - Thanks. I knew that had to be a TT as soon as I read it.

Darlene - I don't think she feels sorry for herself though.

Allison - Just had to go over 2 lines for this one ;-)

Staci - It's long, but not too intimidating.

Stacybuckeye - Hope you get to it eventually ;-)

Nymeth - It's funny, but even after reading that, I've not thought of her as ugly.

  32. what an interesting teaser! I'm curious about this book now!

  33. Oh HAHAAHA, I read this book a few months ago and was totally sold on Wilkie Collins. His writing is so funny. If you like this one you'd enjoy Armadale too, there are some simalarly comic moments and interesting females in that. Are you joining Savidge Reads' Sensation Season? http://savidgereads.wordpress.com/the-sensation-season/
