The Sunday Salon: 11/10/13

Time // 8:30 Sunday morning

Place // my favorite chair

Drinking // black coffee

Reading // Last night I made the decision that reading will be my main activity today... possibly with a football game on in the background. First up will be the local paper and New York Times, followed by If on a Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino.  Our midpoint posting date for #ReadCalvino is coming up on Friday. I'll be out of town, but hope to get my act together and preschedule a post. If not, it will have to wait until Monday.

Our next book club selection is Runaway by Alice Munro and I need to make some progress there, too. The first two stories were very good, so I have high hopes for the next six.

Listening// I finished The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy by David Nasaw ... the entire 31 hours and, wow, what an outstanding biography! This will be tough to follow this act, so I'll turn to something entirely different. I'm considering Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. This seems to be universally loved and I've had an audio review copy for quite some time. Since it's on CD, I'll only be listening in the car. Maybe I should add another book to my phone, too...

Watching// Masterpiece Classic's The Paradise, loosely based on Emile Zola's novel The Ladies' Paradise. It fills the Sunday evening void left by Downton Abbey... just under two months until the new season begins!

Making// Pumpkin Oatmeal in the slow cooker! It was good enough to merit its own Weekend Cooking post... stay tuned.

Anticipating// A full house for Thanksgiving, a quick trip to Florida, and the just-announced return of The TBR Triple Dog Dare. Life is good.

What are you up to this Sunday?

  1. Oh… such wonderful goodness here!

I am ashamed that I have never read Zola, even though I am a French major and have been researching French Impressionism for the past three years. This PBS series sounds perfect!

TBR challenge…. oohh… I truly should join this as I have WAY too many books sitting on the shelves and a real desire to start reading again. I will definitely check it out.

I wish we were expecting a large crowd for Thanksgiving… but I am looking forward to our small family of 7 sitting around the table sharing joy and blessings - and of course, traditional food.

    Enjoy this reading Sunday!

    1. Molly - Of the couple Zola novels I've read, Therese Raquin is the one I'd recommend… short and powerful! Hope you decide to join in the TBR Dare. Seems there are always a few gems waiting to be discovered on the shelf.

  2. Sounds like you have some great books! I've really been wanting to read If on a Winter's Night a Traveller lately, I keep hearing such wonderful things. I had a little bit of a different opinion on Me Before You, but I wouldn't let that deter you from reading it, you're right - it's pretty universally loved. Hope you have a great week!

  3. Thanks for the mention/link. I think spending the day reading is a good idea. I've a book I need to finish and another one I need to read for school....

    1. You're welcome, James. I hope to stick to the dare a little longer this year!

  4. I look forward to listening to The Patriarch but wanted to save it for a long road trip. At the rate I'm going, I'll never listen to it.

    1. Kathy - I think it's the longest book I've ever listened to!

  5. I hope you're having a great Sunday! Here in the UK it is already the last episode of the new series of Downton Abbey this evening, I can't believe how quickly it has gone by! The Paradise sounds good, I haven't seen that.

    1. Lindsay - It's been a great day so far. You're so lucky to get Downton in the fall... so far I've managed to avoid spoilers. Didn't do very well in that department last year.

  6. I've not been following The Paradise, only seen excerpts from it. It looks a bit like Mr. Selfridge? Although I haven't been following that one either. Guess nothing can replace Downton Abbey for me. Two more months to go.

    1. Arti - I haven't been following Mr. Selfridge, so I can't really compare. The Paradise is very enjoyable, but it's no Downton Abbey. Sigh...

    2. The characters are more engaging than the people in Mr. Selfridge, I think -- though the stories are similar!

  7. Isn't The Paradise good?!!! And not just because the lady in charge of ladieswear has such an excellent name. :) I dipped into the book for Paris in July and just couldn't get into it, but I wonder if I'd like it more after the fact, so to speak. And I missed last week, so I'm going to double dip tonight.

    1. Audrey - I'm enjoying The Paradise very much, as are two of my daughters. The book is slow going and it does take time to get into it, but it's still worthwhile. I do think you'd like it more after watching the series.

  8. I'm pondering Alice Munro for the Bookworms but we haven't had much success getting them to enjoy short stories so I'm not sure that will work. I haven't been able to get The Big Guy to watch The Paradise so some reason. I suppose I could just go to another room to watch it!

    1. Lisa - I'm actually a little nervous about Runaway since we've never read a short story collection before... not sure what to expect from the discussion. The Paradise is very good, but probably not the sort of show The Big Guy would like ;-)

  10. I wish I had started watching The Paradise--now, I have to wait for it to make it to Netflix or Amazon. Maybe I should try to read the book first anyway--I still haven't read Zola, despite the rave reviews from other bloggers.

I just read my first Munroe collection and was underwhelmed--I hope the Runaway works out for you.

    1. JaneGS - I've only read a couple of the stories in Runaway so far and hate to admit that I'm underwhelmed, too. Hoping the last six are better. As for Zola, I think Therese Raquin is a great place to start.

  11. I am planning my Thanksgiving menu and just bought the turkey last night. Getting ready for what I believe is our 4th annual Thanksgiving in PJs event. I seriously cannot wait.
