And the Number is...
Ten! That means I'll be reading Cheerful Weather for the Wedding by Julia Strachey for the latest Classics Club Spin. The book was in my "Quickie" category and, at only 128 pages, might qualify as a novella. I purchased the beautiful Persephone Classic edition (shown below) at a used book sale last spring and can't wait to get started. I'll probably watch the 2012 film, too.
Have you read this book or seen the movie? What was number ten on your list?

Enjoy! I didn't participate this time.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melinda.
DeleteAwesome, Persephone's area always a treat. (I don't know anything abt this one. Cool there is a movie.)
ReplyDeleteCare - I've never read a Persephone I didn't enjoy!
Delete*gasp* I love the cover! And the story sounds really good too. I must track down a copy for my TBR shelf.
ReplyDeleteTrish - Isn't it gorgeous?
DeleteAs you know I got Washington Square - also a short book. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteMargaret - Hope you enjoy Washington Square… it's a good story and very readable for Henry James ;-)
DeleteI love the cover. It's a beautiful edition but this book bored me!
ReplyDeleteTi - I know bloggers have had a mixed reaction to this book… we'll see.
DeleteI read the book - wasn't as enamored of it as some people were but still enjoyed it. But I definitely want to see the movie!
ReplyDeleteAudrey - The movie is on Netflix instant now :)
DeleteI love Persephones but haven't read this one yet. I hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Helen. Persephone books are usually a hit for me.
DeleteI know absolutely nothing about this book, so I hope you like it and tempt me with it. Beautiful edition!
ReplyDeleteAndi - I'll let you know ;-)
DeleteI read it once before the film and once after. I enjoyed it more the second time around not so much because I had seen the film but because I realized it is more of a vignette/day in the life kind of narrative than something with a plot that goes somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThomas - That's good to know… will keep it in mind as I'm reading.
DeleteThat is a gorgeous edition! I hope you enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteSam - I love all the Persephone Classic editions!
DeleteWhat a gorgeous cover! I don't know anything about this author or book, but if it's a classic I should probably do a bit of research. 'Tis the season for shortish books, in my opinon! Jan and Feb are chunkster months, but Nov and Dec have too many distractions for a long read.
ReplyDeleteJaneGS - Exactly!! Nothing beats a chunkster in Jan or Feb. Last year I read Fall of Giants, and it was Dickens the year before. This year I'm consider Winter of the World (sequel to FoG), Gaskell, a reread of The Forsyte Saga, or something Russian. We'll see...
DeleteOhh I love the cover. You are so lucky to have Persephone Books - postage to Aust is just too dear for me to enjoy these books too :-(
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your review
With envy
Brona
Brona - This was a lucky find for me… very cheap at a used book sale and in excellent condition. Sorry it's so expensive to ship them to Australia :(
DeleteI was just going over my Persephone catalog last night - getting Christmas gifts and one for myself. Will have to look at this one.
ReplyDeleteMidlife Roadtripper - I could spent hours pouring over that catalog!
DeleteI liked this one, though I didn't love it as I do many Persephones. I thought they did a good job with the movie adaptation. And congratulations on getting a quick read. I got The Earth by Emile Zola, which is long, and probably depressing, but Zola's nearly always wonderful, so there's that. It could have been Moby Dick or The Hunchback of Notre Dame!
ReplyDeleteKaren K. - Depressing or not, I always seem to enjoy Zola. Not familiar with The Earth though...
DeleteThis is new to me. I hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pat!
DeleteI'm afraid I haven't heard of the book or the film. But I do have one book from Persephone Classic which I bought in a book sale too. It's in a minimalist grey cover, called Saplings. Your cover here is much more appealing.
ReplyDeleteArti - It's not a good sign if you're unfamiliar with both the book and movie ;-)
DeleteI liked the book, and began the movie but just couldn't watch it for some unknown-to-me reason. :<) If you want to read what I wrote, here it is:

Nan - Thanks for the link! I will read your post as soon as I finish the book (should be in another day or so)… am very curious about the movie now.
