Ten! That means I'll be reading Cheerful Weather for the Wedding by Julia Strachey for the latest Classics Club Spin. The book was in my "Quickie" category and, at only 128 pages, might qualify as a novella. I purchased the beautiful Persephone Classic edition (shown below) at a used book sale last spring and can't wait to get started. I'll probably watch the 2012 film, too.

DeleteI read it once before the film and once after. I enjoyed it more the second time around not so much because I had seen the film but because I realized it is more of a vignette/day in the life kind of narrative than something with a plot that goes somewhere.

DeleteWhat a gorgeous cover! I don't know anything about this author or book, but if it's a classic I should probably do a bit of research. 'Tis the season for shortish books, in my opinon! Jan and Feb are chunkster months, but Nov and Dec have too many distractions for a long read.
ReplyDeleteJaneGS - Exactly!! Nothing beats a chunkster in Jan or Feb. Last year I read Fall of Giants, and it was Dickens the year before. This year I'm consider Winter of the World (sequel to FoG), Gaskell, a reread of The Forsyte Saga, or something Russian. We'll see...

Brona - This was a lucky find for me… very cheap at a used book sale and in excellent condition. Sorry it's so expensive to ship them to Australia :(

DeleteI liked this one, though I didn't love it as I do many Persephones. I thought they did a good job with the movie adaptation. And congratulations on getting a quick read. I got The Earth by Emile Zola, which is long, and probably depressing, but Zola's nearly always wonderful, so there's that. It could have been Moby Dick or The Hunchback of Notre Dame!

DeleteI'm afraid I haven't heard of the book or the film. But I do have one book from Persephone Classic which I bought in a book sale too. It's in a minimalist grey cover, called Saplings. Your cover here is much more appealing.
