Sunday Sentence, inspired by author David Abrams at The Quivering Pen, is "simply put, the best sentence(s) I've read this past week, presented out of context and without commentary."
Father never felt more present to Abdullah, more vibrant, revealed, more truthful, than when he told his stories, as though they were pinholes into his opaque, inscrutable world. (page 31)
And the Mountains Echoed
by Khaled Hosseini
JoAnn,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful meme! The best sentence read this past week... reminds me of Hemingway's "one true sentence" idea. And your pick is most intriguing. I see Hosseini's book everywhere now, your sentence only makes me more curious. Thanks for posting this, and now I must go over the The Quivering Pen to find out more.
Arti - I love the idea behind this meme, too, and enjoy alternating it with The Sunday Salon.
DeleteI'm pretty excited about this one.
ReplyDeleteI have that line marked too!
ReplyDeleteThat's a fantastic line!
ReplyDeleteI was *this* close to buying this one this morning since I had a coupon and you are loving it so much. But since I just downloaded two books & have sooo many review books to get through, I had to pass. Now I'm pouting!
ReplyDeleteLisa - Oh, I know... thankfully I'm caught up on review books and have managed to avoid NetGalley, too.
Deletegreat sentence - I expect nothing less from this author.
ReplyDeleteBooksnyc - Hosseini has delivered another winner!
DeleteI'd like to say that Hosseini's work moved me, but it so upset me to read The Kite Runner, andThe Thousand Splendid Suns (I think that was the title) that I can't bear any more of his dehumanizing characters. I am sill so sad for the victims in his novels! Although the image of a story telling father is a lovely one...
ReplyDeleteBellezza - His novels can be emotional roller coasters, but he is a gifted storyteller.
DeleteI want to read this as well -- waiting for my turn from the library.
ReplyDeleteI read this book in Bali recently. Reading your sentence had the curious effect of transporting not only straight back into the world of the book (ahhhh *sigh* of pleasure) but also straight back to the banana lounge by the pool in Seminyak (AHHHH even bigger *sigh* of pleasure!)
ReplyDeleteBrona - The reading experience was great at home.. can't imagine how wonderful it must have been in Bali!
DeleteI want to read this one!
