Another Classics Spin

The recent Classics Club spin game was a huge success and now it's time for round two. The rules are the same, only the dates have been changed.

Here's how it works:
- Go to your blog.
- Pick twenty books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club list.
- Post that list, numbered 1-20, on your blog by next Monday. (5/20)
- Monday morning, we’ll announce a number from 1-20. Go to the list of twenty books you posted, and select the book that corresponds to the number we announce.
- The challenge is to read that book by July 1.

I've decided to use a slightly modified version of my first spin list:

Pick Me, Pick Me (books I want to read now)
1. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
2. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
3. Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty
4. My Cousin Rachel by Daphne DuMaurier
5. The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford

Heavy/Chunky
6. Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
7. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
8. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (reread)
9. Them by Joyce Carol Oates
10. An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser

Quickies
11. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
12. Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote
13. A Lost Lady by Willa Cather
14. Hotel Du Lac by Anita Brookner
15. Gigi by Colette

Favorite Authors
16. The Bunner Sisters by Edith Wharton
17. Cranford by Eizabeth Gaskell
18. They Were Sisters by Dorothy Whipple
19. The Winter of our Discontent by John Steinbeck (reread)
20. Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner (reread)

Let's spin...

    1. Melissa - It was my recent reading of The Thirteenth Tale that made me want to reread Jane Eyre. Can't wait to check out your list!

  3. I can't even bring myself to add The Bell Jar to any read list, though in theory I really want to read it. I'm afraid it will be too depressing.

I need to remember to add Gigi to my reading list. I've heard Colette is worth reading.

Cranford would be a good June book.

    1. JaneGS - I read Cheri and The Last of Cheri by Colette a couple of summers ago, so decided to add Gigi to my list for this spin. We'll see what comes up on Monday!

  4. Nice list! I made edits to my first list, too. Loved The Bell Jar and I really want to read An American Tragedy and The Joy Luck Club (I've read part of it). I've read A Lost Lady a few times - one of my favorites. Adore Cather! I love Hemingway, too, although The Sun Also Rises is probably my least favorite of his. Cranford is also pretty great.... I have The Winter of Our Discontent on my "read soon" pile, as I need to get to it for my Steinbeck Project. Good luck!

  5. Oh, I wish Delta Wedding was on my list, I've wanted to read it for ages. The Bell Jar is brilliant.
The only Steinbeck I've ever read is Of Mice and Men, I feel guilty about it as he is my husband's favourite author.

    1. Sam - I loved Welty's writing in The Optimist's Daughter, and am really hoping Delta Wedding is selected. Steinbeck's East of Eden is one of my all-time favorites... I bet you would like it!

  6. I love My Cousin Rachel and Tess of the d'Urbervilles, but I haven't read any of the others on your list apart from Jane Eyre, which I'm hoping to reread soon too. Good luck on Monday - I hope you get a book you enjoy!

  7. I love your Pick Me list - The Bell Jar is wonderful, not depressing and very funny. I also put The Pursuit of Love on my list. I picked some books that I've had for quite a while and it will be nice to scratch one off the TBR. I'm posting my picks tomorrow (Friday). It will be fun to see what everyone draws!

  11. The Bell Jar is such an amazing book. I want to re-read it sometime. Jane Eyre is amazing too. I've heard not a lot of people like Tess of the D'Ubervilles, but I remember enjoying the book (I read it probably a decade ago).

    1. Loni - I really need to read The Bell Jar soon, even if it doesn't come up on the spin. It's been ages since I read Jane Eyre, so it's definitely time for a reread. Tess scares me, just a little. We'll see what the number will be soon...

  12. Hope you get a good #. I haven't read any on your list but I did listen to The Sun Also rises on audiobook. I didn't like it much at all. Might be my lowest rated classic. Here's my Classics Club Spin list if you'd like to stop by.

  13. That is a wonderful list, and I think you're going to have a wonderful time with pretty much any number that comes up. I'd pick 4, 6, 8 or 16 for you, or I'd quite like 17 as I've been wondering about The Bunner Sisters ...

    1. FleurFisher - I'd be happy with any of those numbers... two more days and we'll know!

  14. Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorites, so I hope you get that one!! I love Wharton but I still haven't read Bunner Sisters. I've read several by Whipple but not They Were Sisters, it's still on the TBR shelf. I wish I'd put more Persphones on my original classics club list, I just put one on and I read during the last spin.
