  2. Oh I thought about reading Maine, too. After reading Elizabeth Strout's novels set there I wanted to read more. If you recommend it I'll give it a go.

    1. Vintage Reading - I loved Elizabeth Strout's novels, too! Maine is one my favorite places, and I've missed visiting the last two summers. I also have a weakness for multigenerational family stories, especially those told from multiple viewpoints. Maine (the novel) has it all.

  8. Your ABC list is the inspiration for my own blog posting today. I hope you don't mind. I have credited this as your idea and put a link in so have a look if you like. Hope I can get through the ABC as well as you did!! Also ordered Maine from the library. It looks interesting. It's spring time in Tasmania and great to be reading out doors again...Pam

  10. Happy birthday, Zelda! Deacon turned five in September. And I'm waiting for a fellow to come and take measurements as I type this - it's new windows throughout come November...ugh.

At this time of year pumpkin pie becomes a food group in our house, it's going to be a wonderful month! Enjoy.

    1. Darlene - On, no! The sheetrock dust from just one room was all though the house... maybe you can cover everything with drop cloths? September may mean apples, but October and November are reserved for pumpkin - my favorite, by far. I'm sure Deacon enjoyed a festive birthday celebration. Hopefully he was even cooperative enough to wear the obligatory party hat... Zelda would have none of it!

    1. Arti - I'm so glad it arrived, and one week to the day! Intimate is the perfect word to describe CF's narration. It really does feel like he is talking to you alone. *sigh*

  13. I have heard J Courtney Sullivan speak twice and at each reading I loved the selections she read from Maine - I definitely need to read it soon.

Apt hunting in the city is challenging but hopefully you found something great!

    1. Booksnyc - I'd love to hear her speak! Hope you get a chance to read the book soon. I'm considering her earlier book now. We found a very nice apartment in Chelsea... and bought her a sofa-sleeper so I can visit often!

Hope the Big Move of your daughter goes well. Manhattan, woohoo!

    1. Chinoiseries - You MUST give Downton Abbey a chance. I'm guessing you'll be hooked after the first episode! Three days until the Big Move... she's packing in earnest now ;-)

  19. Happy 5th Birthday to Zelda!

I'm sure it's a relief to have found an apt in Manhattan for your daughter. It's amazing what some peoplecharge for a place the size of a closet! Still, living in NYC after college was great fun. I'm sure your daughter will love it.

I've lsted Maine on my wishlist after your enthusiasti recommendation. I cannot wait to read it.

  21. You had a great month! Lots of fun times and good books. I want to read Maine and will see about getting it on audio.

I used to have a kayak and I used it a few times on one of our local lakes, but then I took up biking and the kayak wound up sitting in the garage. I finally sold it at a garage sale. I love to kayak, but I don't like the hassle of getting it from the house to a lake. Biking is much more convenient.

    1. Les - The best thing about kayaking is being able to do it in my backyard! My daughter just took up biking this summer and I'm very tempted, but many of the roads are narrow and the traffic scares me.

    2. In your backyard?! I'm green with envy!!

I don't bike on the roads, just bike trails, which we're very fortunate to have A LOT of!

    3. Les - Yes, we're very fortunate to live on a small lake. My header photos are all taken in the backyard. I wish we had more bike trails around here. Riding bikes in Sanibel is the best... love riding through the Ding Darling.
