A Labor Day Weekend Update

Hello, friends. Happy Labor Day weekend! We finally have some cooler weather along the CT shoreline and it feels like fall is on the way! The windows are open and I'm loving the early morning and late evening temperatures in the 60s, and even the occasional dip into the 50s. Can my first pumpkin spice latte of the season be far behind?

As much as I love fall, I'm savoring these last few days of summer. We took a picnic dinner to the beach the other night, my brother and SIL from PA stopped to have lunch with us at the lobster shack yesterday on their way to Providence, and tonight we plan to attend the final Concert on the Green of the season. Most schools in the area started last week. That seems early to me since it was always after Labor Day in New York.

The House on Fripp Island by Rebecca Kauffman

Now this is my idea of a summer read! Two families vacation in a lavish South Carolina beach house. The wives are childhood besties from West Virginia whose paths have drastically diverged, the husbands barely tolerate one another, and the kids (preteens and teens, with angst) are along for the ride. The novel deals with family dynamics, dysfunction, and class issues, plus a there's a drowning. I've enjoyed several of Kauffman's previous novels, especially The Gunners and Chorus, and this was another hit. The goodreads ratings are shockingly low - Too many characters?  Too much dysfunction? - but it was a 5-star read of me. If you're not a fan of a messy family dramas, it's probably best to run in the opposite direction.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Annotated Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, David Shapard

I've been a Jane Austen fan for decades, but Mansfield Park was the only one of her novels I'd never gotten around to rereading. It's Jane's longest novel and for years I've considered it my least favorite. As part of an annual Austen in August tradition, a small group at Modern Mrs. Darcy decided to tackle The Annotated Mansfield Park. Last summer we read The Annotated Persuasion and I enjoyed both that particular edition and the leisurely reading and discussion schedule, so I was happy to participate again.

I managed to stick to the schedule until Volume 3, but then lost all restraint and raced through the last few chapters. I still don't care for how it wraps up so quickly and mostly off stage, but it's always a pleasure to read Jan Austen... especially with this group!
⭐⭐⭐⭐

These Summer Storms by Sara MacLean

Family drama in a beach house seems to be my summer reading sweet spot right now. This one is an over-the-top 'rich people behaving badly' story set on a private island in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Franklin Storm, the recently deceased patriarch suggestive of tech mogul Steve Jobs, remains controlling and manipulative even in death. He has set up a surprise win-your-inheritance challenge that takes family dysfunction to the next level. There is also an enjoyable, but unexpectedly steamy, romantic storyline. This was a fun, frothy page-turning summer read.

This series seems seems to be developing a cult-like following. Very enjoyable so far!

Good Morning Comrades by Ondjaki, translated by Stephen Henighan

This is the next selection for my World Lit book club.

Dracula Daily by Bram Stoker

The week ahead//

We don't have a lot planned for the week, other than a day trip to a coastal wildlife refuge in Rhode Island. I also hope to get a painter in for an estimate. My goal is to get the living room, dining area, hall and stairway painted before we head south. Last week we replaced dining room chandelier and that's already made a big difference!

How was your week? What have you been reading?

  1. We're still in the 90s so I have to drink my PSL's iced. lol Hope all goes well with the painting estimate and that you have an easy time choosing colors.

    1. Jinjer - Choosing a paint color is SO hard and stressful. I'm already dreading it!

    1. Cindy - That's what everyone says! I'm really enjoying Vol 1 and look forward to continuing the series. The plan right now is to read one a month.

    2. JoAnn, good luck with that, I read them all in July, LOL!

    3. Cindy - Haha! I'm going to be reading them with a group, so we'll see if I have enough restrain to stick to the schedule! It sounds like a few have read them all and are now rereading slowly.

  3. I love that you're looking forward to fall while getting in some pleasure at the remaining days of summer.
I enjoyed Dracula Daily a couple of years ago.
The Annotated Mansfield Park sounds good. I've discovered that annotation can sometimes get me to read something that seems too difficult otherwise. I wouldn't have made it through Dubliners by James Joyce if I hadn't read the annotated version.

    1. Joy - Dracula has been getting creepier, for sure, but there weren't as many entries as I expected. I think the pace will pick up as we head into fall. The annotated Austen editions have been a real treat and I'm already wondering what book will get chosen next summer. Who know, I may even give Joyce a try with annotations!

  4. Fall feels far away here; summer often runs through October. We enjoy the little cool respites you northern folk allow to drift down to us---we will happily take anything you are willing to send us.

I'm glad to see how much you enjoyed The House on Fripp Island!

    1. Deb - October is definitely still summer in SWFL, too! I do love fall in New England though. Rebecca Kauffman is now an auto-buy author for me.

  5. School starts after labour day here in most parts of Canada too JoAnn. Enjoy the cooler weather for now and I hope you have a great week.

  7. A family drama with The House on Frip Island? Count me in. I like those.
Glad you had some good down time, family time and I hope the painting selections goes well. I'm a fan of a light brown/tan color called Shiitake by Sherwin Williams. When we remodeled our previous house that brought just enough color into the bathroom without being too dark. Good luck with choosing! That can be fun, just bring home some samples.

Thank you for the kind words about our lightning strike. Such damage but could have been worse!

    1. Tina - Family dramas is a vacation house get me every time! I'm stressing over the paint colors. Just looked up Shiitake and it's really pretty. Another one I'm looking at is called Drift of Mist, which is a neutral heading toward grey. Decisions, decisions...

  8. Oh, your current temps sound like a dream! Yes! time for your pumpkin spice latte! I am beginning to ignore ratings, as I read some books that are 5 star reads for me, but low ratings across the board. Interesting, huh? I did add Good Morning Comrades to my "search for this book" list, which I will do after I comment. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Miaismine - Ignoring goodreads ratings is probably smart. There are several reader friends whose opinions I trust and value, so I get most of my recommendations from them. I'm about halfway through Good Morning Comrades and not loving it. It's short and for a book club, so I will finish.

  9. I have Summer Storms on my TBR shelf (good old Book of the Month!) and was just trying to decide what to read next. I think I'll choose this one. My brother was just on nantucket for a week and said it was overwhelmingly preppy so that's 2 nods for this novel.

    1. Helen - My daughter mentioned that These Summer Storms was one of the choices, but she decided to read my copy and select something else. The New England islands can be ridiculously preppy ... it makes me laugh! Hope you enjoy the book.

  10. Nice wrap to the summer, both in terms of savoring the last bit of summer and beach reads. I didn't do any specifically summer reading per se as I found myself consumed by other books, but both of your family beach reads sound good and messy.

Glad you buddy-read MP--it definitely can be challenging, but I love it nonetheless. Mrs N is such a monster.

    1. JaneGS - I just can't resist those messy family in a beach house books and usually read one every summer, but two in a month is a lot for me, lol! It was a really nice experience reading MP with a group and I'm already looking forward to next year. I'm sold on David Shapard's annotated editions and will start searching for them at bookstores, library sales, etc. There was no mention on the inspiration for Mrs. Norris, but today I picked up a copy of Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley and will see if I can find anything there.

  12. You know, I really do love fall, but I can't help but wish we had more of summer weather temps where we are. Guess we just need to start taking some road trips to warmer climates in the summer!

Yep, school always started after Labor Day when I was growing up in California. I thought it was insane for the kids to go to school in early August when we lived in Nebraska. It was far too hot! Seems to be the norm now.

The Rebecca Kauffman book sounds like a winner. I'll see about getting it on audio. I'm currently reading The Rose Code (almost finished!) and will dive into The Ride of Her Life (for book group) as soon as I finish. Still listening (and enjoying) Project Hail Mary, which is fun, especially since my husband is re-reading it and we chat about it while driving down the highway to California. Currently on the road to Santa Rosa/Bodega Bay. The campground is a bit quieter since our arrival on Labor Day. We always enjoy camping in the off-season when there aren't quite so many families...

    1. Les - I always thought our summers in central NY were short, but I think yours may be even shorter! I'm fine with normal summer heat here, but could do without the humidity.

I may be one of the only people yet to read Project Hail Mary, but I understand audio is the way to go with his books. Hope you and Rod are having a wonderful trip. We always have a list of attractions and parks to visit after school starts, too. I love it when the crowds are gone. Enjoy your travels!
