I talk a lot about my morning walks with an audiobook... always a highlight of my day. Besides the obvious benefit of exercise, I love time spent outdoors. It's even better if a water view and birds are involved!
We are renting a house near the shore in Old Saybrook, Connecticut this summer. It's on a peninsula bordered on the south by the Long Island Sound and the north by a cove. I've tried several new walking routes and really like one that involves two completely different water views, as well as quiet tree-lined neighborhood streets. Inspired by Kay, I invite you to come along with me...
Love the photos of your walking route; it looks very tranquil. We are planning on a day trip to Old Saybrook but perhaps not until September - not sure. Wondering whether the Katherine Hepburn house is worth seeing?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of books, I started Unsettled Ground, Clare Fuller and I am really enjoying the story. I know you mentioned that it was on your list.
Diane - From what I can tell, the Katherine Hepburn house (in Fenwick)is a private residence that has been sold since her death. The museum is currently closed for renovations, but the arts center is open and their schedule is online. We will still be here in early September if you would like to meet up. Unsettled Ground is on my list... glad to hear you are liking it so far.
DeleteThanks for responding JoAnn. I will let you know if September works for us as we are planning on a trip to NH as well plus there are some medical appointments in between for my husband so need to figure that all out. It would be so nice to catch up for and in person though so thanks.
DeleteThose walking routes are the kind that I enjoy as well. We have a waterfront walk we like to take now and then but I have to drive 45 miles to get there. LOL.
ReplyDeleteTi - Waterfront walks are the best! That path is right across the street from the house we're renting... already hoping we can get it next year.
DeleteSuch stunning views. I could live there, if not for all the snow!
ReplyDeleteTina - When we lived here, I could almost pretend that winter wasn't happening. There were only one or two significant snow events... almost nothing compared to what we were used to in central NY, lol!
DeleteThank you for sharing all of these photos with us! I don't know if we'll ever get to that part of the country, so I appreciate seeing it from your vantage point. The Sound looks like a great spot to try a SUP or just go swimming. Is the water very warm?
ReplyDeleteI've gotten back into walking every day, but the view doesn't really change much. I was happy to spot a whale the other day, as well as an eagle flying overhead, but photos don't show them very well.
Les - The water is chilly from my now Floridian perspective, but my husband likes to cool off in the sound on a hot day. I've only seen stand up paddle boards a couple of times here... thought there would be more.
DeleteI've never seen a whale! Would love to one day, but I know what you mean... the best things about my walk don't show up well in photos either. There is one spot here where I can see two lighthouses at the same time! Can't seem to capture it though.
It sounds like you need to visit the Oregon coast! We have a resident pod of gray whales that are here most of the year (except when they head south to Baja to give birth to their babies). Oh, and we have light houses, too! :)
DeleteLes - Definitely!! Not sure when I'll fly again, but that's high on our list.
DeleteThose photos bring back memories from college; it's such a beautiful area.
ReplyDeleteHelen - We just love it here! Which college did you attend? We moved here after we got married because my husband went to college here and wanted to come back for residency. I ended up loving it just as much as he did. It's good to be back again after all these years.
DeleteVicki - It sure is! I can walk for an hour without having a car pass me on the road... and other walkers are so friendly.
ReplyDeleteLovely views, what a great walking area!
ReplyDeleteAngela - It sure is! As much as I love my walks on the beach in FL, the pavement here makes this a lot easier.
DeleteThanks so much for sharing images of your rambles. Walking is really the best medicine for heart and head.
ReplyDeleteThe Street is on my list--I will have to brace myself before reading it.
Enjoy your summer in New England.
JaneGS - You definitely need to brace yourself before reading The Street! I'm just over 75% and it paints a very bleak picture... unlike many of the other books from this time that I've read. Hope to finish today or tomorrow.
DeleteIt's great to walk with you and see your sights there. Beautiful. Makes me miss the East sometimes. Tomorrow I fly to Calif for a 10 day visit so that should be good. I like walking with our dog around 8 a.m. with an audiobook ... it's comforting. Enjoy your stay.
ReplyDeleteSusan - Safe travels and enjoy your visit to California. A walk with an audiobook is the best way to start the day... even better if a dog is involved!
DeleteWhat an absolutely beautiful walk! It looks very calming and the views are amazing. Looks like a wonderful place to walk.
ReplyDeleteKatherine - It sure is... we're loving our time here!
DeleteThis was a lovely post, so nice to see some water and blue skies!
ReplyDeleteTee - Thank you! I'm loving these summer walks.
DeleteThank you for sharing the pictures of your walks! It looks beautiful and I can imagine even walking longer to enjoy your book and the scenery.
ReplyDeleteIliana - My walks are longer here... love the combination of beautiful surrounding and much lower humidity compared to FL!
DeleteSuch a beautiful walk! I'm glad I'm not in Florida right now for quite a few reasons but that morning beach walk was a great way to start my day.
ReplyDeleteAnchorage is on the coast but the tides are odd here. The tides are bore tides, which seems to mean that we only see mud for half the day and then a huge tide comes rolling in all at once instead of gradually. I'd like to watch it coming in but we haven't managed it yet.
There's a nice, long coastal trail but it's more wooded than open to views. Bears and moose are frequent visitors, which makes me too nervous to walk it by myself. We rented bikes on Sunday and rode the whole thing. We finally saw a bull moose in the wild! We think that was our first. We also saw a mama moose and her baby.
Enjoy your walks!
Jen - Your comment about bore tides sent me down a google rabbit hole. I'd never heard of that before, but is sounds fascinating. Must be quite a sight! If you happen to catch it, I'd love to see the photos. Alaska is on our bucket list, but it's hard to tell when we'll be able to do that.
