Paris in July 2021: A Reading List

It's almost time... Paris in July begins in a week. This event has been a blogger favorite since 2010. Hosted once again at Thyme for Tea, Tamara says:
Here, at Paris in July blogging central, we are connecting you with other lovers of Paris through the month long blogging event. Over the past 10 years, participants have used this event to post about new recipes, favourite holiday memories, best books on Paris, set in Paris, about Parisiennes, music from Paris, best cocktails found in Paris, favourite walks in Paris.... almost anything about Paris or France.

We cant really go to Paris right now, but here we will share many different sides of our love of french things, and Paris.

July will be a busy month for me. I'll be visiting family for the first half of the month, so my participation may be minimal. However, I still hope to try a new recipe and read a book or two for this event.

My List of Reading Possibilities:

Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin,  translated by Hildegarde Serle
Added to my tbr list after reading Diane's review

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
This classic has been on my list for years.

The American by Henry James
Another classic that has been on my list for a long time...

Paris for One by Jojo Moyes
A short story by Jojo Moyes should be fun.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
...because I must be the only person who hasn't read this book!

The Pleasing Hour by Lily King
Writers & Lovers  will be one of my favorites this year... this is King's debut novel.

You Me Everything by Catherine Isaac
A recommendation from Sara at Fiction Matters

by Alexander Lobrano
This is a new memoir sounds delicious!

Will you be spending Paris in July this year? The sign up post is here.

  2. Love this list! So many good titles and I'm not sure which I'll pick. Maybe All the Light We Cannot See because I haven't read it either.

    Enjoy this event!

  4. An interesting collection! The only one I've read is The Sun Also Rises--and that was decades ago. :)

    1. Jenclair - I read a lot of Hemingway years ago but, after watching the PBS documentary a few months ago, I decided to try to get to the ones I missed.

  6. I am not sure why, but I really enjoy seeing other bloggers' lists of what they are going to read. I have got to read All the Light We Cannot See soon, it has been on my shelf for so long!

    1. Helen - I love seeing other bloggers' reading lists, too. And it's good to know that there are still a few of us out there who have not yet read All the Light We Cannot See!

    1. Diana - Paris in July is such a fun event and there are so many interesting posts! In the past I've read books, watched movies, tried new recipes, and visited French restaurants. Last summer I missed it all together, so am really looking forward to it this year. Hope you can join in the fun!

  8. Don't feel too bad about "All the Light We Cannot See." I, on the other hand, am the only person I know who didn't like the book all that much. :-)

    1. Sam - It's tough to be in the minority when a book seems universally loved, but your take makes me more curious. Hope I can get to it next month....

  11. Wonderful choices! I love All the Light We Cannot See--I've read it twice and visited St Malo and certain places in Paris mentioned in the book after reading it the second time.

Just added The Pleasing Hour to my tbr list--it sounds great.

Enjoy Paris in the summer! Happy reading.

I enjoy foodie books like My Place at the Table--will have to add that to my list.

I haven't read Sun Also Rises, but A Farewell to Arms was part of my Paris reading a few years ago. I like Hemingway, sort of--I can only read him once every five years or so, and then I'm good for awhile :)

    1. Thanks, Jane. I'd like to read all of them, but library availability will likely determine what I actually end up reading. Hemingway is perfect for me in 5 year doses, too - lol!

  12. Great list, JoAnn. I think I read The Sun Also Rises when I was in high school, but I sure don't remember a thing about it! I loved All the Light We Cannot See and think it would be a great choice, but I recommend waiting until you aren't so busy so you can fully appreciate Doerr's writing. At least that's what'd I'd have to do since I am always distracted while traveling. I'm still reading the same mystery that I started back on June 1st. Reading and RV road trips do not work for me! And, once we get back home, we have two sets of family coming to visit during July, so I doubt I'll get much reading done then, either. Good luck with this challenge!

    1. Les - Good advice! I haven't read a word since we left early Saturday morning. Once we get to my parents house, I'm sure there will be plenty to keep me busy there too. Not surprised you've been reading the same book all month... that'll probably be me for a few weeks, too. Hope you're not roasting in the middle of the west coast heat wave. Take care!

  13. I'm really excited about Paris in July and need to work on my potential reads list. I hope you enjoy Fresh Water for Flowers. I just read it and some parts I thought were great but I think it could have been shortened a bit. You've got some great books to choose from so I hope your armchair travels to Paris will be filled with great stories!

  15. I will think of joining Paris in July. We were in Paris last in June 2018 and I still think of it from then. I'm glad you mention the book You Me Everything as I had not heard of that one before ... and my husband & I like the Dordogne! I will see if my Library has it. Enjoy your books!

  16. A busy month for me too but I'm promising myself at least one book and one recipe (and then hopefully more!) I read The Americans for Paris in July years ago and loved it...

    1. Audrey - One book and one recipe would be a realistic expectation for me, too. I just get carried away making lists! ;-)
