Six in Six: 2015 Edition

Jo at The Book Jotter  is running her Six in Six meme again this year. It's a fun way to summarize the first six months of your reading year by sorting books you've read into six different categories. Choose from the ones Jo suggests or feel free to create your own. The same book can obviously feature in more than one category.

I always enjoy this little exercise and participated in 2012 and 2013.  I could have sworn I played along last year, too, but can't seem to find the post.

Six new-to-me authors:
Emily St. John Mandel
Rabih Alameddine
Elena Ferrante
Paula Hawkins
Nickolas Butler
Atul Gawande

Six tried-and-true authors:
Dorothy Whipple
Stewart O'Nan
Anthony Trollope
Thomas Hardy
Theodore Dreiser
Lucy Knisley

Six classic novels:
Sister Carrie  by Theodore Dreiser
They Were Sisters  by Dorothy Whipple

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End  by Atul Gawande
On Immunity: An Inoculation  by Eula Biss
An Age of License: A Travelogue  by Lucy Knisley

Six in Translation:
My Brilliant Friend  by Elena Ferrante
The Story of a New Name  by Elena Ferrante
Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay  by Elena Ferrante

  1. This is a really fun meme. I love lists, especially when they involve books. I enjoy making them and reading those created by others.

With that said, I am afraid to compile my own list of sixes as I fear it will illustrate just how few books that I have finished this year.

    1. Diane - This has been a great year for classics, mostly thanks to the Barsetshire Chronicles group read.

  4. Oh - this looks fun and I've never seen it before! I have no idea how I'd come up with 6 classics and 6 nonfictions, though (I think I've read 1 classic so far this year and 2 nonfictions...saving a bunch of nonfictions for Nonfiction Nov). And - love seeing Nickolas Butler on your lists!

    1. Sarah - Part of the beauty of this is you can use categories of your own choosing - new releases, wealthy people behaving badly, etc. Nickolas Butler is my favorite new author this year!

  9. You've read a really interesting mixture of fiction, classics and non-fiction. Pleased to see Far From the Madding Crowd in one of your categories. I feel I need to re-read this then watch the new adaptation. I have also taken part in this meme: https://thebookwormchronicles.wordpress.com/2015/07/08/meme-six-in-six-2015/

    1. Thebookwormchronicles - The new adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd was a beautiful movie, but left out a few key scenes from the novel.

    1. findingtimeto write - It's a pleasure to meet you, too! This meme is a great way to see how our reading is shaping up for the year. I was pleased to see such a mix contemporary, classic, and nonfiction works... especially since I have been mostly indulging my whims this year!

  11. This reminds me of how abysmally I'm doing on the reading of classics and nonfiction this year! Luckily, I have only one more scheduled review right now - maybe then I can get back to my own books and my goals. You've had a good year so far!

  13. I played along, but I had to pick different categories than you, because I haven't read six classics or six non-fiction books this year. I think I need to add a little variety. :)

    1. Carrie - Oh, good! My categories have been a little different every year and being able to choose your own makes it even more fun. I'll be right over to check out your post :)

  16. Great lists JoAnn, I especially like the inclusion of non-fiction titles and of books in translation. I enjoyed Station Eleven and The Girl on the Train. I really enjoy this meme, both reading everyone's lists and taking part, it's fun to do and doesn't take too long.

    1. Linsday - This is probably the first time I've ever read six books in translation in six months, and quite possibly the entire year, too. My reading has been pretty atypical in 2015!
