The Sunday Salon: Trying to Stay Warm
Greetings from the icebox!
The scene// 9 AM, my favorite chair, sipping hot coffee, Zelda napping at my feet, the thermometer outside the window showing 3 degrees.
Reading// I finished The Gravity of Birds by Tracy Guzeman last night and loved it! Today's question is what to read next. Four books are waiting to be picked up at the library (including The Boys in the Boat, our next book club selection), so I hate to start something new from my shelf today. Maybe I'll read The New York Times a little more thoroughly and spend some time writing reviews… or perhaps a short story or two.
Listening// One more CD left in The Signature of All Things and I don't want it to end.
Watching// Syracuse basketball… They barely slipped past Miami yesterday afternoon. Although these guys are still undefeated, the games are killing me. I'm really looking forward to tonight's episode of Downton Abbey - only twelve hours to go!
In the kitchen// I'm making lasagna this afternoon - perfect comfort food for a cold day. My parents and brother are coming to dinner.
Blogging// It's back to business this week for sure! Twin A returned to college yesterday and we're settling back into our 'normal' routine. It's time to catch up on reviews.
Grateful for// Smart wool socks from Daughter #1. I want to keep them on my feet forever!
Have a wonderful Sunday and stay warm, friends.

We are bracing for another "Alberta Clipper" (my new favorite term), but at least it will move through fairly quickly. Stay warm! it does sound like a perfect day to stay inside with books & coffee (tea in my case, and a cat on the lap).
ReplyDeleteLisa - I love all the weather terms that have been bandied about this winter.... who knew it could all be so entertaining? Hope you have an afternoon filled with tea, books, and cats :)
DeleteSounds cold! Brrr. I am looking forward to tonight's Downton, too - but the last two weeks have just about killed me.
ReplyDeleteCarrie - I know what you mean. The show seems to have taken a different turn with Anna's story.
DeleteI have the "what to read next" question to answer myself. I want something with a lot of marital dysfunction. LOL.
ReplyDeleteTi - And I'm considering depression and suicide with The Bell Jar ;-)
DeleteWhat a nice picture! Now I want some lasagna but I don't know how to make it. :-( Oh well. Tonight we're having turkey enchiladas, refried beans, and Spanish rice. Try to stay warm!
ReplyDeleteVasilly - I've somehow become the official lasagna maker in the family... don't think my mom or sisters have made it in years. Turkey enchiladas sound really good to me, too! Enjoy your Sunday :)
DeleteYour snow sure is beautiful! We warmed up to the 40s overnight (bizarre, right?) and are slowly on our way back below zero today, so we have the frigid cold and vicious winds, but virtually no snow left on the ground. Alas, more will surely come soon. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteNomadereader - It's definitely a beautiful time of year... the cold and wind would surely seem much worse without such a pretty view from the window! Not sure when we'll see 40 again. Sigh.
DeleteWool socks sound good, to go with my fleece lounge pants. Keep warm this week!
ReplyDeleteHavree - Fleece lounge pants.... yes!!!
DeleteWe've had some of the coldest weather I can remember and I seriously don't know how people do cold winters year in and year out. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteKathy - I'm glad I got to escape to Florida for part of it.
Delete3 degrees! Good grief! I thought it was cold here, but 23 is downright balmy, isn't it? Enjoy those wool socks.
ReplyDeleteLilea - Next on my 'to do' list is learn to knit wool socks myself!
DeleteIt's freezing where I am too. I miss being able to go for a walk without my face freezing off!
ReplyDeleteMelissa - I know what you mean...only went to the mailbox today and my face hurt by the time I got back to the house :(
DeleteWas watching Syracuse yesterday while I was on the treadmill and was thinking of you!
ReplyDeleteLisa - LOL, those guys are killing me!!!
DeleteIt was like a heat wave here today - high 20's after a so so cold week. Lasagne sounds so good. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteDiane - The lasagna was delicious... looking forward to leftovers later in the week.
DeleteLasagna! Smart Wool socks! Sounds like you have everything you need (except those library books).
ReplyDeleteTerri B. - I braved the weather this afternoon and picked up those books. Now I can't decide which one to start first ;)
DeleteI'm in Tasmania and we're heading into the 80's and 90's this week. The snow looks good. Haha Though I remember the snow growing up in Michigan. What a lovely Sunday you're having. Sounds perfect.
ReplyDeletePam - I can only dream of 80's! We had a very nice day indoors yesterday though.
DeleteYay for Boys in the Boat, lasagne and normalcy! I always think of you when I hear there is treacherous weather. You ALWAYS have it, whether everyone else does or not.
ReplyDeleteSandy - We are certainly blessed with wonderful weather here in CNY... counting the days until I can escape again ;-)
DeleteI love Smart Wool socks and mine are getting worn a lot this winter! Stay warm.
ReplyDeleteNise' - Smart Wool socks are the best ever!!
DeleteSounds like you had a lovely day!
ReplyDeletePeggy - It was a perfect indoor day :)
DeleteIt's so ridiculously cold ... I've barely been out of the house in days.
ReplyDeleteBeth F - Only a matter of time before cabin fever sets in here, I'm afraid.
DeleteLove your photo and your header photo too. Beautiful scenery. Sounds like you had a great day planned! I hope you enjoy Boys In The Boat. I've read positive reviews about it.
ReplyDeletePat - I just read the prologue of Boys in the Boat this afternoon. Thinks it's going to be a great book!
DeleteYou could've written a blog post for me. 3 degrees (and very windy!) here this morning. Love my Smart Wool socks! Boys in the Boat on my nightstand. Catching up on blogging. Ah, but I didn't spend the past few weeks in Sanibel. ;)
ReplyDeleteStay warm!
Les - LOL!!! So many coincidences...feel free to copy and paste ;-)
DeleteI loved The Boys In The Boat so much I emailed the author and even received a reply. It's a very inspiring book to me, just the kind of determination and courage I love the most in life. Your day sounds delightful, and similar to mine, only I made chicken soup and the chicken pot pie with the stewed chicken and broth. Blessings in your week, JoAnn!
ReplyDeleteBellezza - I just read the prologue for Boys in the Boat and can tell it's going to be a wonderful book. Happy birthday, a few days early :)
DeleteToday it's a little warmer here but we had really low temps last week like you have today...icebox for sure!
ReplyDeleteI adore lasagna and it's one of my husband's specialty dishes! I'm sure you had a great dinner.
What did you choose to read today?
Amy - I ended up reading newspapers yesterday, but braved the weather to pick up library books this afternoon (it was another snow day!) Now my decision is which book to start first. Loved the prologue to Boys in the Boat, but We Are Water is calling, too. We'll see...
Delete3 degrees... yikes. Sounds about like it is here. Such lovely weather... :) Boys in the Boat sounds nice, I'm sure it's an inspirational book.
ReplyDeleteNice picture by the way, I'll bet that's a lovely view in the summer.
Hi Greg - I think Boys in the Boat will be an excellent read. I've heard the audio version is excellent, too. Schools were closed here on Monday and delayed today due to wind chill/cold - this is getting ridiculous! The lake is very beautiful in the summer and the fall colors are amazing. I change my header photo seasonally, so stay tuned :)
DeleteI won't mention the weather here in Phoenix because everyone would hate me.
ReplyDeleteI saw on Goodreads that you really liked The Signature of All Things - I need to move it up the list.
Stay warm and happy reading!
Anbolyn - A friend in Phoenix just posted a picture of himself on a golf course... he got quite a few envious comments and a few nasty ones, too!
DeleteThe Signature of All Things really took me by surprise. I never expected to like it as much as I did. It almost seems Dickensian in scope... so good!
I'm so glad to know you liked The Gravity of Birds. I'm terrible and still need to read my publisher copy.
ReplyDeleteAndi - I like The Gravity of Birds more and more as I continue to think about it... such an ambitious first novel!
DeleteI love college basketball season too but my Buckeyes are killing me!
