Spring Break Reading

Spring break is finally here, and the twins and I are heading to Florida. My husband will stay here to meet Daughter #1 in New York on Sunday (her study abroad program is sending everyone home before the Royal Wedding), then they will join us in Sanibel. According to my father-in-law, the season is winding down, temperatures are heading up, and the island is getting quieter. That's fine with us. We had snow again on Monday and are desperate for warmth and sunshine.

We're looking forward to a low-key vacation walking on the beach, biking, and reading.  I'll have internet access with my iPad, but do not plan on posting until we return.

My books for the trip include:

  • A Tragic Honesty: The Life and Work of Richard Yates by Blake Bailey
  • Jane and Prudence by Barbara Pym (unless I finish tonight)
  • Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich
  • The Report by Jessica Frances Kane
  • my iPod loaded with several audios
  • plans to peruse the book sale room at the library and visit the bookstores

Twin A is on a classics streak and hopes to read:

  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
  • Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
  • A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
  • A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
  • Great House by Nicole Krauss

Twin B has packed:

  • Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
  • Harry Potter rereads
  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I'm not sure what my husband will decide to bring, and Daughter #1 plans to select a few books at the Sanibel Island Bookshop. Although I won't be posting, I'll try to read a few blogs each day. See you in May!

  7. Lucky, lucky all of you! I'm with Twin A - Mrs. D. I could read a million times more than the five or six I've already read it. :<) Great to read at twenty, forty, sixty years old.

  8. Sanibel Island is beautiful-this is showing my age but I was there before they had a bridge!

  10. Have a wonderful wonderful time, JoAnn! I've heard such great things about Sanibel Island and I hope it's the perfect retreat from your long winter (snow again?!).

Love how varied the twins reading is! And I'll be curious about the Louise Erdrich book. She's an author whose books I collect but haven't actually read any of them.

  11. Have a great trip!

Good heavens, but Twin A is mighty ambitious--that's quite a list!

  12. Julie - Thanks, I can't wait to get there!

Reviewsbylola - We are definitely all different ;-)

Softdrink - Notice I said 'hopes to read', lol. I'm sure she will read at least a few of them though.

Diane - Thanks. My in-laws have a place there. We have been going for years and love it, too! Glad you like the photo.

Kay - Thanks, it has been a LONG winter!

Nan - She is quite a reader. I'm hoping to read a couple of her books myself!

Mel U - From what I understand, there has been development since the causeway, but very controlled. It is a gorgeous island!

Viv - Thanks, see you in May!

Trish - We are an eclectic bunch, that's for sure! Sanibel is a beautiful, relaxing island... a perfect anecdote for our monstrous winter. Love the pictures on your blog today :-)

  21. No snow or ice on the lake!! Woo hoo! And welcome to my wonderful home state. Sanibel is my #2 vacation destination in Florida. The shells! And it is so laid back, no high rises. Ahhhh. You have a wonderful time. Weather is nice and HOT. Your book lists (including your kids') is awesome.

  24. I am impressed by Twin A's ambition, but it struck me that so many of her books are depressing!! I hope she has some lighter reading packed as well -- it might be hard to read such serious books on a beautiful island in Florida.

But I'm glad you're escaping a cruel winter. It's starting to reach the 90s in Texas and the humidity is horrible. I wish I could escape to somewhere cooler but ironically I have just booked tickets for Orlando the end of June. Which will be almost as hot and more humid, sigh.

  25. Have a great time! I hope you have lots of sun and fun! Sanibel is a beautiful spot.

Enjoy your books! They look great! I love Twin A's list although more of them are rather bleak & depressing :o)

  26. Hope you're enjoying your vacation! (And like the others, I am thrilled to see a new lake photo ... love that pink-hued water!) I'll be interested to see what you think of Shadow Tag. My mom goes to Sanibel for vacation and loves it so much ... I've never been.

    Enjoy!

  27. We've had a few warmish spring days in the past month, but now this past week it's been quite chilly and a trip to FL sounds heavenly. Especially Sanibel! I'm still sad that my husband and I had to cancel our vacation there a year ago last Christmas (due to a blizzard here)! We'll get there one of these days.

    Happy reading! And beachcombing!

  28. Have a super time, JoAnn! I am so envious that you will be basking in warmth and sunshine.

Lucky you getting to read The Report, it sounds really interesting!

  29. Have a GREAT time! You will definitely enjoy the weather - I am in SW Florida now visiting my parents for Easter and it's in the 90's but lovely with no humidity.

Thanks for the heads up about the Sanibel Book Shop - I will have to put it on the list for my next visit.

  33. Oh I love Sanibel...though we stayed on Captiva when we visited. Get some good shells! And I had to laugh at the difference between the two twin's reading lists!!! One sounds like school reading and the other sounds like vacation reading. Enjoy your vacation...and being "unplugged."

  34. Everyone - Thanks so much for all the comments! We got back late Saturday and I'm still trying to get caught up. Sanibel was amazing ( as always)... we all love it there. Hope to post within the next few days.
