Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day was on the shelf, of course, and so was Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple. Since they are already on my shelf too (I loved them both), I kept looking...
After Claire's mention of Team Whipple vs. Team Laski, my hope was to find Laski's Little Boy Lost, but no luck there. Although I'm firmly affiliated with Team Whipple, Laski remains an unknown - and that needs to be remedied soon!
I was very happy to find two other books from my wish list:
- Mariana by Monica Dickens
- The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson Burnett
This weekend, the plan is to finish Molly Fox's Birthday by Deirdre Madden and make a dent in The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton (for my book group), but after that it should be time for another Persephone!
Oooh, what a lovely treat Jo Ann.
ReplyDeleteI'm also pleased to hear that you're reading Molly Fox - I think I read that this time last year and hugely enjoyed it.
Oh lovely! I do get a kick out of Persephone Classics in US bookshops.
ReplyDeleteHere's to you being acquainted with Laski soon!
Ooh they both look delightful. I really need to place an order with Persephone.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to see the two books you are reading. Both are only shelves and I really must get around to reading them.
Isn't the cover for Mariana lovely! It's languishing on my shelf so if you ever plan on reaching for your copy I'd love to join in! The Making of a Marchioness was a wonderful read, at one point I realized I wasn't breathing for fear of what would come next...just you wait and see.
ReplyDeleteI can't compare Laski and Whipple. They are so different. Whipple is a comfort read and Laski is so versatile that the 3 books I've read by her have all been completely different. Great purchases! I'm one of the few who loved Mariana!
ReplyDeleteBetween you and Jane of Fleur Fisher I am going to become a Persephone addict. Next time there is a special Persephone week, I'm going to join in. Looks like you have many happy reading hours ahead of you.
ReplyDeleteVerity - I haven't read a book like Molly Fox in quite some time... such a wonderful character study!
ReplyDeletePaperback Reader - I may be asking for some dovegrey covers for my birthday this summer. Funny how the US chains have picked up on just the classics.
Vivienne - I wonder if they will see a small sales increase after Persephone Reading Week...
Darlene - It would be fun to read Mariana together this summer!
Mrs. B. - I wondered if it wasn't like comparing two very different objects... not necessarily an either/or choice.I am looking forward to Mariana.
Margot - Persephone could always use one more fan ;-)
These books are so gorgeous. Throughout the past several months I've been hearing so much about Persephone books but haven't taken the time to really check them out.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the reading!!
Very nice! Although I am too much of a Persephone to really comment insightfully, I have found that there is not much about any of their publication choices to find fault with. Happy weekend reading!
ReplyDeleteThose books look so inticing.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find a Laski soon! I'm not against Whipple; I like her too. I just love Laski so much more. But who knows, maybe when I've read more Whipple.. :)
ReplyDeleteSo you can find some of these at B&N??? I thought we could only get them from overseas. They're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new Persephones, JoAnn! It was hard for me to fight the temptation to order one at the end of the week, but I'm Being Good and sticking to my book buying ban :P
ReplyDeleteEnjoy! I read Mariana as part of Persephone Reading Week, and enjoyed it. As for the Burnett - I loved both the books I've read by her so far (A Little Princess and The Secret Garden), so am looking forward to your thoughts ont he Making of a Marchioness.
ReplyDeleteI really wish I had joined in on Persephone week. I have really been regretting it! I suppose it's not too late though to introduce myself to Persephone so maybe I will see what my library has.
ReplyDeleteThat's so great that they can be found in the US now. I do love the covers with pictures. I find the covers of the biannuals (prob. not a word) that come in the mail from P. almost achingly beautiful. They evoke such strong feelings. I keep them all, and my favorite is the woman knitting on the train.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your new books! After Persephone week I'm having a hard time controlling the urge to order a few myself, but I've been able to resist thus far.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I didn't hear about this challenge until it was too late -- I haven't read any yet but I do have three Persephones patiently awaiting their turn on my to-read shelf (summer reading!). I'll definitely try and participate the next time around.
ReplyDeleteAnd how lucky you are to find them at your local bookstore! Mine only has Miss Pettigrew and of course I have that one already.
I so want to read Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day; sounds like a different read that I would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThe Molly Fox one also intrigues me. Stop teasing me please LOL
I really need to look into this company. I keep hearing such great things about these books and I love their commitment to women writers.
ReplyDeleteThe Persephone Classics editions are lovely, and I am pleased that they are being found in more and more shops now.
ReplyDeleteI am on both Team Whiplle and Team Laski. Both wonderful for different reasons. No versus is required!

Thanks for all they comments, everyone! We spent another long weekend in New York City (my daughter had her orientation for the ESPN internship, but can't move into the NYU dorms until this weekend) and I'm so far behind on everything! I plan to reach for one of my new Persephones very soon.
