TSS: Winter Break!

It's winter break! School is out, the twins are home, my husband has a couple of days off... there may not be much blogging this week. Our main activities will include college visits with Twin A (Twin B gets her turn in April), reading, catching up on movies, shopping, trying a few new recipes, and walking in the snow.

I finished a couple of books last week - Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork and Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. So now, in addition to Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann, I'm three reviews behind. One morning must be devoted to reviews!

Today I'm reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick - a novel in words and pictures. The size of the book shocked me when I picked it up at the library (over 500 pages, hardcover), but it looks like it can easily be read in a day. Not sure where I'll turn after that...

And finally, a winter weather tidbit. Baltimore edged out Syracuse, NY last week for first place in the snowiest city in the US competition! Syracuse has received about 76" so far and we're on track to receive out usual 120 inches. Baltimore was at 79.9" on February 10. I'm sure this is a competition they would rather not win! Read all about it here.

I hope you're enjoying this Valentine's Day. Are you reading, having a romantic dinner, or maybe digging out from the latest round of snow?

  1. I read Hugo Cabret in just a couple of hours. It's a lovely book.

We are having a lovely day at 70 degrees or so in Tucson (I hate to say but don't worry, in the summer, you'll be happy and we'll be very miserable!).

It sounds like your week will be fun! I hope you and your family enjoy yourselves!

  2. My daughter has Hugo Cabret. I've thumbed through it, but have never read it from cover to cover. I really need to do that. It is very thick, but Emma read it in less than a day.

No snow in this part of Florida, although the panhandle got some. They said on the news yesterday that 49 states had snow! The temp was in the 50's, but the sun was nice and warm and made me want to take a nap! In a second I have to start cooking a yummy feast. Happy Valentines Day to you!

  5. Hugo is awesome. I love the drawings and spend a lot of time looking at them and all of the little things he includes in them!! Sarah's Key broke my heart- part of history that I was unaware of.

Have a great break with the family and enjoy all of your snow!

  6. It's been a very casual day for us. I spent some time reading The Weight of Heaven, which is fantastic but such a heavy read. Heavy for my heart anyway and then we ordered Chinese food so now I am stuffed but happy ;)

I am on the tour for Let the Great World Spin in May but I haven't cracked it open yet.

  10. I was supposed to have my romantic Valentine's dinner tonight but we're being bombarded with snow, so I'm not sure it'll happen.

The Hugo Cabret book sounds interesting--I'll look forward to your review.

  11. Rhapsodyinbooks - I think I can handle the snow and cold better than heat (and humidity!)... I've been doing it all my life ;-) We're off on college visits tomorrow and Wednesday. Should be fun. I really enjoyed the process with my oldest daughter.

Sandy - Spend a few hours with Hugo - you won't regret it. It was so good - my review will be up tomorrow or Wednesday.

Dana - Overall, I though Sarah's Key was wonderful. Should have the review up next week.

Booksnyc - My review of Sarah's Key should be up next week. I really enjoyed it, and feel another round of WWII reading coming on...

Staci - I loved Hugo Cabret! The history surrounding Sarah's Key was totally new to me, too - so horrifying and sad.

Gavin - I loved Hugo Cabret and will have the review up in the next day or two. Don't know why I'm having such a hard time starting the Marcelo review - it was a great book.

Sheila (Bookjourney) - I'm way behind on movies, and I love watching them with my daughters... should be fun. Thanks for visiting!

DS - See if you can sneak a few hours with Hugo... it was wonderful! I bet my nephew would really appreciate it, too.

  14. Sometimes, we get so engrossed in reading that we shirk away review-writing! ;-) Happens to me plenty of times! LOL! Best to go with the moods, someday, we'll sit writing the reviews for sure. Have fun!
