It looks like I'm the last person on board with this one, but I've decided to join Carl's R.I.P. IV Challenge. By now, you're all familiar with the details. I've signed up for Peril The Third, which entails reading a single book from any of the various categories, but may get more ambitious if I find myself on a literary roll! I'm sure some short stories fitting these categories will be included in my fall reading, too.
Here are the categories:
Mystery
Suspense
Thriller
Dark Fantasy
Gothic Horror
Supernatural
Here is my reading pool:
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
The challenge runs through October 31...Let the perils begin!
Completed 10/29/09
The Woman in White - reviewed here
I've read The Book Thief, Northanger Abbey, and The Woman in White - all three are excellent!
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of reading Shadow of the Wind for this challenge as well.
oops --- realized I was logged onto my husband's computer (mine is in the shop with a crashed hard drive). Sorry --- this is really Molly :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pool! Welcome to the scary season.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle for the challenge myself.
Northanger Abbey is a wonderful Gothic pastiche and quite unlike Austen's other novels.
The Woman in White is great; although I personally prefer The Moonstone (more sensational and suspenseful but less scary).
I'm probably one of the few people who was disappointed by The Book Thief; I hope you enjoy it.
This challenge looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThe Book Thief is one of my all-time favorite reads but I have heard good things about The Woman in White too. Can't wait to see what you read.
Wonderful! Believe it or not, I, being new, had never heard of the R.I.P challenge! I'm in! Thanks for stopping by on my site, as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading The Woman in White either this month or next, too! I didn't join the challenge only because I'm still way in deep with so many and not even sure if I can finish them all. I feel so stressed with the challenges now that the year's almost coming to an end.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list! This should be a lot of fun for you. Northanger Abbey is my favorite Austen - an hilarious send-up of all things gothic romance.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for your kind words and prayers following my FIL's death.
ReplyDeleteSNAP! I'm planning to read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. Let's hope we both enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteHooray JoAnn! I really should be finishing my short story for this week - see ya!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to figure out how your books fit the categories -- I wasn't thinking Shirley Jackson was a thriller, so much. But maybe the categories aren't lining up with the titles! could do this one -- I like these categories and this one looks doable! In act, I'm listening to one mystery on tape (well, my ipod) right now -- jsut started it, and am reading a thriller, "Three Kisses," by Heath Daniels. It's a long book, but very fast-moving and with a complex plot that holds your attention. It's one set all over the world, so it involves actual current events (Middle East, al Qaeda, etc.)
ReplyDeleteCould I re-read a favorite gothic romance from childhood -- does re-reading count? Sure hope so.
I LOVED the Book Thief, and I so enjoy this challenge. Have fun Joanne.
ReplyDeleteMolly - LOL! I was wondering who Geoff was. Glad to hear you've enjoyed several of my choices. I've had Shadow of the Wind on my shelf for so long I'm starting to feel guilty. Hope you get your computer back soon!
ReplyDeletePaperback Reader - I just loved The Moonstone, and have high hopes for WIW. Northanger Abbey would be a reread. I enjoyed it so much and have been meaning to read it again since our trip to Bath last year. So many have raved about The Book Thief, and I'm worried my expectations may be too high.
Book Psmith - I'm thinking Woman in White, but you never know! The Book Thief is calling out, too...
Madeleine - Glad you're joining in. I'll look forward to seeing what you decide to read.
Claire - It took me quite a while to decide to join, but I figured I should be able to read just one book. The challenges can be a source of stress though, and I'm trying to decide what to do next year.
Frances - I love Northanger Abbey, too! It's just laugh out loud funny at times, but still second behind P&P for me ;-)
Zetor - You are very welcome. It's good to hear from you.
Jackie (farmlanebooks) - It looks like there will be quite a few of us reading those books! Can't wait to get started...
Darlene - I haven't even started a short story yet!
Liz - Thanks for visiting! No, the categories aren't lined up with the titles. The books just need to be able to fit in one, and you don't have to read all categories...very low stress. And rereading counts, too! Three Kisses sounds good. I'll look into it.
Diane - This is going to be fun!!
You picked some great titles for this challenge!! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteOh, goody! I promised myself a Wilkie Collins for this one, but haven't made up my mind yet. I like your list; have fun!
ReplyDeleteI finished The Woman in White today and I loved it! We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Northanger Abbey and The Book Thief are excellent too. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteOK, I like low-stress challenges. Life is challenge enough at the moment! (And reading is my great escape.)
ReplyDeleteMaybe for a re-read, a Mary Stewart or Victoria Holt, just to revisit my teenhood. THAT would be fun!
I really liked Shadow of the Wind -- His new book, The Angel's Game, is on my TBR list. P&P&Z is up next. The Book Thief is a winner, also.
ReplyDeleteStaci - Thanks...this is going to be fun!
ReplyDeleteds - The only Collins I've read is The Moonstone, and I LOVED it. Can't wait for WIW!
Nymeth - So glad to hear WIW was a hit with you, too. Hope to get started soon.
Liz - Stress-free is the only way to go :-)
Kim - So many good choices for this challenge. I'm trying to decide where to turn first!
