Have you seen the bookish Seven Deadly Sins meme making the rounds this week? I was tagged by Pat at Posting for Now, who was tagged by Diana at BookofSecrets, who was tagged by...
So, my sins:
1. Greed: What is your most expensive book?
My husband bought me a beautiful set of leather bound Jane Austen novels from The Easton Press several years ago for Christmas - I love them!
2. Wrath: What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?
Jodi Picoult - I used to love her earlier books (Plain Truth, My Sister's Keeper), but then they started to feel formulaic. Now I don't read her at all.
3. Gluttony: What book have you devoured over and over again with no shame?
As a kid, there was a time when I read Harriet the Spy once a month (maybe fifth grade). My adult answer is Pride and Prejudice.
4. Sloth: Which book have you neglected reading due to laziness?
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy - maybe this winter?
5. Pride: What book do you most talk about in order to sound like an intellectual reader?
I think any book talk is perceived as intellectual among most people, but I particularly like talking about classics. Big surprise, right?
6. Lust: What attributes do you find attractive in a male or female character?
Male: tall, dark, and handsome... intelligence and humor a big plus.
Female: intelligence and independence
7. Envy: What book would you most like to receive as a gift?
I'd actually prefer a gift card so I can indulge my bookish whims and "buy with 1-click"!
Instead of tagging people, I'm going to urge you all to play along.
What are your bookish sins?
Sins you don't have to repent! My early American poets would be envious. Amd Harriet the Spy! I still have my fifth-grade copy. (P.S., I will read War and Peace with you if you like.)
ReplyDeleteAudrey - Let's give W&P some thought. We visited The Mount after readingThe Age of Innocence, what do you think our reward should be for W&P... A trip to Russia? Dinner at The Russian Tea Room? ;-)
DeleteI enjoyed your answers JoAnn. Thanks for participating!
ReplyDeletePat - This was fun. Thanks!
DeleteSome blogger somewhere pointed out that War and Peace has 365 chapters. So I read it in one year. I started with a chapter a day, then moved into reading 7 chapters every Sunday. Most of the chapters are really short, so it's not a big time commitment that way, and easy to get through some of the slower passages. I'm glad I read it and would even consider reading it again, eventually. Unlike, say, Moby Dick.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea!
DeleteAmy - Thanks for the suggestion...this deserves some serious thought. I'll never read Moby Dick!
DeleteI love this and will probably use it for a post next week!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you about Jodi Picoult (unfortunately) AND about Harriet the Spy.
bookmammalmusings - I hope you decide to do this! Too bad about Jodi Picoult, but hurray for Harriet the Spy :)
DeleteFun! I'll have to save this one for a rainy day. I feel the same about Jodi Picoult. For a while I couldn't devour her books fast enough but now I have some older ones that are still unread on my shelf. And "I think any book talk is perceived as intellectual among most people." LOL! Funny how some people just can't seem to make themselves talk about books. BUT, I'm dying to know what you think of The Sparrow so hurry and read it, yes? ;)
ReplyDeleteTrish - Can't wait to see your answers to this meme! So sad about Jodi Picoult's books because My Sister's Keeper was one of my favorite audiobooks and I shared reading Plain Truth with my sister.
DeleteThe Sparrow is definitely out of my comfort zone, but I'm so curious about it after seeing the readalong reaction.
I'm shocked that you like talking about classics! I never would have guessed! I have read one book by Picoult - Had With Care might have been the title but the ending made me so angry I swore never again! This is a great post. I really enjoyed seeing your answers! I'll definitely have to hang onto this post. It'd be a lot of fun to do!
ReplyDeleteKatherine - Yeah, me and classics... a big surprise ;-) Hope you decide to play along with this one, too. I'd love to see your answers!
DeleteFun post, JoAnn. I'll think about answers and might join in.
ReplyDeletePeggy ann - I hope you do! Would love to see your answers :)
DeleteI know what you mean about Picoult - I felt manipulated the last time I read one of her books. It felt like she had an agenda she wanted to promote.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion - You're right... somehow her agenda, or purpose, seems to have changed :(
DeleteLove your answers! Yes, I would prefer a gift card also to buy whatever I'd like.
ReplyDeleteHarriet the Spy was a favorite in our household.
Also about Jodi Picoult. Some of the early ones, like: The Pact, Keeping Faith, Perfect Match were so good! I wish that this didn't happen, but some authors fall prey to it, like Patricia Cornwell, whom I used to read and admire.
Rita - Another Harriet the Spy fan! I was disappointed that none of my daughters ever appreciated it quite as much as I did. I used to like Patricia Cornwell, too.
DeleteHow fun! I'm just back from a trip to CA and so trying to catch up on my blog reading. I share your slothfulness with regards to War and Peace...I really mean to read it...next year! :)
ReplyDeleteJaneGS - I WILL get around to War and Peace... maybe next year. When the P&V translation came out, I HAD to buy it in hardcover. Then my excuse became "it's too heavy". Now that I have a kindle, I've run out of excuses ;-)
DeleteI can definitely understand the love/hate relationship with Jodi Picoult. I felt so cheated by the end of My Sisters Keeper, but the more I thought about it, the more I really liked the ending. Well, like is a relative term, but I'm sure you understand. Lol.
ReplyDeleteBrittany @ http://www.spacebetweenthespines.com/
Brittany - Oh, yes... I understand. Can't remember the last time a book made me cry like that!
DeleteThanks for sharing your answers, JoAnn! Eep, War and Peace is one of my "sloths" too.
ReplyDeleteDiana - I figured I'd have some company with that "sin" ;-)
DeleteEnvy would be a hard one - my answer would change from day to day!
