"Sometimes, immersed in his books, there would come to him the awareness of all that he did not know, of all that he had not read; and the serenity for which he labored was shattered as he realized the little time in life he had to read so much, to learn what he had to know."Stoner

This has been in my TBR bookcase for years. I loved his other novel "Butcher's Crossing". I think I'm saving this one for my old age, since I think he just wrote the two novels.
ReplyDeleteJames - I can already tell Butcher's Crossing needs to be on my wish list!
DeleteI know exactly what that quote feels like! I, too, have had Stoner in my nook for ages, a year or so at least, and it's on my Classic Club list. I can tell from this quote alone that it's going to be very meaningful to me.
ReplyDeleteBellezza - Stoner is a beautifully written novel. Can't wait to return to it tonight.
DeleteI have "Stoner" on my shelf --- waiting to be read. That quote is one many of us could use I am sure. Have a good week Joann
ReplyDeleteDiane - It's been on my shelf for over a year... so glad to finally pick it up!

ReplyDeleteBeth F - The writing in this book is just beautiful!
DeleteFantastic quote. That has such powerful truth behind it. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteRita - You're welcome. I've only read two chapters, but have several quotes flagged already.
DeleteDescribes perfectly how I feel when reading a really good book. How can one person (the author) know so much?!
ReplyDeleteJaneGS - I know what you mean... that's probably why this quote struck such a chord.
DeleteThis is a book I really want to read. The writing is gorgeous, as you said. I'm glad to know you're enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteAmy - This is a book I want to read slowly and savor every sentence!
