Top Ten Tuesday: I HAD to Have Them

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week we're asked to list ten books we just had to buy but still haven't read. Now my list could easily be two or three (okay, maybe four or five) times this length, but here is the stack I'll share today.

from the top:

1. High Rising by Angela Thirkell
a recent purchase, first in line post-TBR Double Dog Dare

2. Stoner by John Williams
Matt and Marie both loved it, no doubt I will, too

3. The Brontes: Wild Genius on the Moors by Juliet Barker
another recent purchase to feed my new Bronte-mania

4. The Priory by Dorothy Whipple
purchased at Persephone Books a few years ago, because who knows when I'll return

5. Some Tame Gazelle by Barbara Pym
saving this for Pym Reading Week in June

6. The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
I keep trying to convince my book club to select this title

7. The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich
a signed copy I couldn't resist

8. Edith Wharton by Hermione Lee
purchased at The Mount, still unread

9. The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt
purchased in London because I loved the UK cover

10. Them by Joyce Carol Oates
it's on my Classics Club list

Which book (that you needed to buy) has been on your TBR pile the longest?

  1. You will love Stoner, it is a wonderful book. Some Tame Gazelle will be a hoot. And The Priory is a delight. You could knock those three out in one weekend but they are all so enjoyable it might ruin you for further reading.

    1. Thomas - Don't know how I could not love Stoner. From the blogger reviews, it seems like all I could ever want from a novel. The sad thing is that I have literally dozens more that might be just as wonderful...

    2. Just keep in mind that Stoner has been a revelation to all who have read it.

  3. I think half of my book shelves would qualify. There is this great little bookstore in Chicago that I visit every time I'm there, and I always walk away with whatever the owner has hand-sold to me. I think I may have only read one or two that I've ever bought there. I am a mess.

    1. Sandy - I think most of my books fit this category, too. James' TBR dare is such a service to bloggers.... now if I could only stick to it!

  4. Oh - The Space Between Us is excellent - I hope your book club selects it soon! That Bronte book is intimidating - I can see why it may have lingered on the shelf!

    1. Colleen - We met today and it was not chosen. I'll read it on my own, then I can advocate more convincingly next time...

  9. It will be so nice to have you in the Angela camp! And don't forget, we're meeting at the Mount this summer to choose another book to not read. (The Hermione Lee would be on my list of this sort, if I dared to make one.)

    1. Audrey - I'm all for a meeting at The Mount this summer... but have fears that the bio may go unread for another decade (or two).

  12. Oh, I remember this meme!! I need to go back and see if I've actually finished any from the list I made the first time around!!

And I really, really want to go to the mount, and buy Edith Wharton's bio there in the gift shop. Someday it'll happen!!

  14. Oh we have all been there. Some books just haunt you until you buy them, and then they become silent. I have quite a few, but the one that comes to mind the most, Katherine by Anya Seton.

Your Byatt book sounds much more interesting than my Possession book, which I dropped without finishing.

  16. I just started listening to Plague of Doves and really enjoying it. I'm only one disk in so I can't make any grand proclamations that will have you rushing to pick it up but I'm looking forward to driving just to listen.
