TSS: Easter Sunday Edition

Happy Easter! The coffee is brewing, the Easter Baskets are on the table waiting for the girls to wake up, and Nan's Baked French Toast is in the oven. Before our day starts, I'd like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers following my Aunt's death last week. Although it was a sad time, the funeral was truly beautiful and it was a blessing to have all the family together.

Needless to say, not much reading happened last week. I only managed a single chapter in The Ladies' Paradise by Emile Zola. The review for The Classics Circuit is scheduled for the 17th, so it will be my primary focus this week.

Also starting this week, Jill at Fizzy Thoughts is hosting a Wuthering Heights Read-along. The pace will be a slow and leisurely three chapters per week, and we'll be posting our thoughts on Wednesdays. I was surprised to learn that a few other people have not read the book - I truly thought I was the only one!

Blogger reaction to Wuthering Heights seems to be mixed, although I'll admit to seeing more "I hated it" comments. In any event, you'll be seeing Wuthering Heights Wednesday posts here for the next couple of months. If you haven't read this classic or are in the mood for a reread, grab the button (isn't it fantastic?) and join us!

My April reading plans also include A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway (a follow-up to the biography I recently finished) and The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter (for Paperback Reader's Angela Carter Month).

Have a Happy Easter, and I hope you can fit in at least a little reading time today. Do you have any April reading projects planned?

  1. Please put me down as someone who loves Wuthering Heights. I'm even tempted to join in the read-a-long since it's been a few years since I read it last.

  2. Oh, I loved Wuthering Heights, but it's been so many years since I read it! Need to read it again. And even though I've read some Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast was not one of them. Going on my list!

    Your French Toast sounds yummy!

  3. I am so sorry about your aunt. I am currently working on my Zola book too--I need to finish it this week! Enjoy your Easter!

  4. I actually almost made your recipe today, which I saved from the time you originally posted it! But I went with coffeecake (store bought) instead - and regretted it! :--)

Love seeing your spring heading back!

    Happy Easter!

  7. I am also participating in the Zola Classics Circuit this month :) Sounds like you have some great books coming up on your TBR list. My only other project in April is the Read-A-thon this coming weekend.

  8. The button is indeed fantastic! I'd like to re-read Wuthering Heights. I hated it when I first read it, but then again, I was 15. I already have so many reading plans for April, though, that it will have to be later.

  9. I hosted a WH read-along a little over a year ago, and it was quite an experience. I'd never read the book until then. I wouldn't say that I hated the book, but it was not what I had expected. Very dark, and very detestable characters!

  10. Happy Easter JoAnn. Again, my condolences to you and your family.

I'm reading Wuthering Heights too. I've tried once before to read it and didn't get too far but I'm willing to try again. I think you either love it or hate it. I'm hoping to at least enjoy it this time.

  11. Happy Easter to you and your family.

  12. I've tried to read Wuthering Heights several times since high school and could never, ever get into it. I'm not sure why because it seems like a book I should love. I did enjoy Jane Eyre, though.

  13. Happy Easter Joanne.

I should read A Moveable Feast as well. I own it and have wanted to read it for a while now.

  14. C.B. James - Why not join us? Three chapters a week is very manageable, and you'll still have time for your other reading.

Laurel-Rain Snow - I don't know how I've made it this far without reading Wuthering Heights. Looking forward to the first three chapters tonight. Have a great week!

Reviewsbylola - I'd like to finish Zola this week, too. I usually think about a book for a few days before I sit down to write the review... I feel the clock ticking!

Rhapsody - The baked French toast was delicious! I prepared the it all this morning, so it wasn't soggy at all. Glad you like the spring header - it's finally that time of year!

Book Dilettante - I'll be sure to watch the movie after I finish the book!

Readerbuzz - This is my second Zola novel, and I'm definitely a fan.

Wendy - I'm going to miss the read-a-thon yet again... guess there's always fall. Hope you enjoy Zola.

  15. Nymeth - Reading tastes change as we mature, but there are some books I hated in high school and didn't like much as an adult either (The Scarlet Letter). Wonder what you'd think of WH now...

Sandy - That seems to be the rap on these characters! I can dislike characters and still like a book, but we'll see how this goes...

Thanks, Darlene. Glad you're reading WH, too. I'm going to start tonight.

    Zetor - Thank you!

E.L. Fay - I've never even attempted WH... it'll be interesting to see how I react to it.

Diane - Thanks. I hope to start A Moveable Feast as soon as I finish Zola.

  17. Welcome back! That is an impressive selection of books you have for April - it is great that you are reading so many classics!

  18. I haven't read Wuthering Heights, but I'm reading Jane Eyre this week. Enjoy!

  19. I have such crazy, mixed reactions to Wuthering Heights. I had to read it FIVE times throughout my undergrad and grad school years, so I've gone from hate, to appreciation, to apathy. It's funny that I still am not 100% sure how I feel about it! It's one of the few classics that I struggle to explain my thoughts about with my students.

As for April goals...just to read more than I have been. :) I'm on a week-long Spring Break, so I hope to get some serious reading time in! Happy Easter to you too. I hope it was a good one.

  20. Softdrink - It'll be fun (I hope)... got started last night!

Kim - I read Jane Eyre years ago, but didn't like it all that much. Have been thinking that it deserves a reread. One day...

Mjmbecky - I've never heard anyone describe their reaction to WH quite like that! Last night I only read the preface to the 1850 edition (written by CB) and the first chapter. This is going to be an interesting experience...

  21. Booksnyc - It's good to be back - felt kind of weird not blogging last week. I really love classics and every so often seem to read several in a row. A classics binge may be ahead!

  22. To read Wuthering Heights is not simply reading, but an experience. You're completely wrung out by the end but oh what a journey.

  23. Happy Easter Joann! I hope you had a great holiday.

  24. Darlene - I just read the first three chapters and can tell this will be a wild ride!

Thanks, Marie! We had a great day with my family.
