Teaser Tuesdays - Let the Great World Spin

"We seldom know what we're hearing when we hear something for the first time, but one thing is certain: we hear it as we will never hear it again. We return to the moment to experience it, I suppose, but we can never really find it, only it's memory, the faintest imprint of what it really was, what it meant." (page 47)

by Colum McCann

This book won the 2009 National Book Award and I'm starting to see why! Although I began with an audio version, I decided to borrow the book from the library, too. Quite a reading/listening experience!

  6. This was one of my favorite books of last year. Just gorgeous. And this quote is an interesting reflection on revisiting this set of stories that galvanize around that one walk from tower to tower as all focus shifts to central point. What is the difference between the immediate experience and the experience filtered through memory?

  11. Aleksandra - I'm enjoying this book a lot.

Sandy - This is a great book! I liked the audio, but the structure is so unusual that I had to get a hard copy just to check things out. Now I'm reading at home and listening in the car.

Dana - I like this book so much! Hope to finish this week.

Nise' - Memories seem to take on a life all their own, don't they?

Kaye - Yes, this is definitely a good one.

Jennifer - Why is it our tbr lists always seem to grow on Tuesday?

  12. Frances - This is such an amazing book! I can't wait to see how all the stories will be tied together. I'm reading at home and listening in the car, so should finish by the end of the week.

Diane - Judging from the first 250 pages, you won't regret making time to read this one!

    Emma Michaels - Thanks - it's a great book.

Staci - Funny how memories can change over time. What you remember, and would swear as truth, may not always be what actually happened.

    Alayne - Thanks!

Carolsnotebook - It's almost scary how true that can be!

  16. Are you reading and listening to the whole thing in each format, playing catch-up in the car and at home? I bet you're picking up different highlights from each format.

I'll be reading this for a TLC Book Tour soon ... really looking forward to it!

  17. Dawn - I started out listening, then got the book because I wanted to reread a few passages and take a closer look at the structure. After that, I listened in the car, found where I left off and began reading at home. An excellent experience! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did - it's a great book!

  20. This just arrived in my mailbox on Tuesday. I ordered it after seeing it in Bookmarks magazine, and it seems far too good to pass. I only hope it lives up to my expectations, which is often a difficult thing to do!

  21. Bellezza - Expectations can be hard to live up to. I had an interesting experience with this book - started with the audio (multiple narrators), then got a copy from the library to double check structure and quotes. Ended up reading at home and listening in the car and got the best of both worlds! Need to get the review written soon..
