"Their idea of a fun night out was to go to one of Tehran's
husseinias - Shiite study centers - to listen to a radical mullah lecturing on Islamic revolution. The two would, of course, sit separately - Khadija in her heavy black hijab always in the back with the other women, where their presence wouldn't distract the men." (page 61)

... my book club's January selection.
Sounds like a great book to read. I will check it out!

ReplyDeleteSounds like the kind of book I usually like :) Will add to my TBR!
ReplyDeleteSounds beautiful! We don't often think of that dimension of life in the Middle East.

Sounds like it has the potential for intensity.
ReplyDeleteSeeing that Fl had a few snow flakes this past weekend my teaser is from the Chocolate Snowman Murders and can be found here
The teaser makes it sound like a really interesting book.
ReplyDeleteInteresting teaser. It sounds like a good read. Here's mine.
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting. I have a book on my shelf by Geraldine Brooks that I still haven't read and the name is escaping me right now. I look forward to your thoughts on this one.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I haven't heard of this one before. It's a subject I'd like to know more about, so I'll have to give this one a look. Good teaser!
ReplyDeleteHere's mine.
Wow! I was hooked even BEFORE I realized this was by Geraldine Brooks, an author I love. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMine is here.
It's always a little shocking when you read how these women live. I fear I wouldn't live long under such rules.
ReplyDeleteOohh, very interesting!
ReplyDeleteThis book is in my "To Read" stack and I have heard that it is definitely worth reading. Our Book Club mentioned it as a consideration, also (and we may get to it after the next three selections). Thank you for your Teaser!
ReplyDeleteGautami - It's very interesting so far.
ReplyDeleteFleurfisher - My book club went through a rough time last year, but I think we're finally back on track.
Alayne - So far each chapter has covered a specific issue - the veiling, marriage customs, etc.
Jennifer - I hope you'll like it.
Kals - I love nonfiction that is this fascinating.
Laurel-Rain Snow - I love books like this that give you a look into a different culture.
Kaye - There have been a few passages that were quite intense - even difficult to read.
Book Dilettante - There's a lot of interesting info (and perceptions) in here.
Andrea - It is!
ReplyDeleteDar - This is one of her nonfiction books. She turned to novels a little later. I think you'd enjoy her writing.
jlshall - I love when nonfiction reads this well. It's a fascinating book.
Stephanie - If you're already a fan of Brooks, then you'll definitely want to check this out!
Sandy - It's eye-opening all right. I wouldn't last long, either...
Lisa-Marie - It's very interesting.
Hope - I have a feeling there's going to be a great discussion at our next meeting!
Now this is one book that I am not familiar with? Great teaser can't wait to read more when you post your review.
ReplyDeleteBTW...Joanne, I gave to a "Love Your Blog Header Award" today.
Very interesting teaser....I hope you're enjoying it!!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to read Brooks for awhile. I look forward to seeing what you think of this one.
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds interesting. I've never quite understood how Muslim women manage to get by. I would be angry and frustrated all the time.
ReplyDeleteMy teaser is here.
I want to read this book, I've had it in the back of my mind for awhile.
ReplyDeleteDiane - The book is nonfiction, written as a result of Brooks time as foreign correspondent with the WSJ. Thanks so much for the award!!
ReplyDeleteStaci - I am enjoying this... it's fascinating!
Stacybuckeye - My book club meets next Friday. I'll probably do one post one my thought and club reaction near the end of the month.
Lisa - I think I would be too, but this book really gives some insight into their lives.
Aimee - Thanks!
Bookmagic - So far, I highly recommend this one.
This sounds great. I just finished Year of Wonders, which I loved, except for the epilogue, which made no sense until I read she used to be a journalist (I think) in the Middle East.
ReplyDeleteGreat teaser. Is this a new one by Brooks? I loved Year of Wonders by her.
ReplyDelete*smiles*
Softdrink - You're right. She was a foreign correspondent with the Wall Street Journal for many years.
ReplyDeleteKim - This is actually one of her older books. It's nonfiction and was published in 1994... before she started writing fiction.
This is a fascinating book...I read it years ago, before anyone had much interest in the middle east. It bears re-reading, I think.
ReplyDeleteBecca - Fascinating is the perfect word for this book! I'm really looking forward to my book club meeting on Friday... it should be one of our better discussions.
ReplyDeleteNine Parts Desire is enroute to me from Paperbackswap. I plan to read it for the Social Justice Challenge this month. Let me know what you think of it!
ReplyDeleteBooksnyc - My book club will meet to discuss Nine Parts of Desire on Friday (guess I'd better hurry and finish)...hope to post about it next week. Thanks for visiting!
