Library Loot - Bad Timing?

After being at the top of the library hold list for the last two months, it finally arrived!

Over the weekend, I picked up Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and, so far, have managed to read only one chapter. Don't get me wrong. It was a great chapter and I'm looking forward to reading more, but...

Could there be a worse time to pick up this dense, 532 page historical novel? There won't be much reading time until after Christmas, and Wolf Hall is due January 2. Will this turn out to be a "test read"? Will I get hooked, decide to keep it and pay the late fees? Will Santa bring me another book that I'll "need" to start immediately? Stay tuned...

Library loot is a weekly meme co-hosted by Eva and Marg.

  1. Typical!

I actually think it is a good time to read it - pick it up on Boxing Day and don't put it back down until January 2nd. I plan on reading a lot over the holidays as there is never enough quality reading time as there is in that lag that exists after Christmas.

I think it took me eight days to read Wolf Hall. My uncle, who is a proud new father and doesn't have the time to think let alone read, is reading the tome on the commute to and fro work daily and he's faring well.

  2. I definitely understand. I thought I'll be reading a lot right now but sadly, my reading is going at a snail's pace. Hope you do better than me.

  3. Mine just showed up at the library, too. I'm not sure I can finish it in two weeks, and I can't renew it because of the waiting list. I may have to wait on it. :-( Good luck to you!

  4. I hope you manage to enjoy this book. Personally, I can't handle anything too heavy lately. I do hope to read this one as well.

  5. I can totally relate! That is exactly how I felt when my turn came for The Children's Book by AS Byatt. I was in the middle of tons of grading and...unfortunately...didn't get it read. I am considering using my BN 25% off coupon and just buying my own copy :)

I look forward to your review of this, whenever you have the chance.

  6. I can't wait to see how this turns out!! LOL!!

  7. Claire - I'm thinking of doing just that! We'll see how it goes. The temptation will be to read new Christmas books instead, but I'm hoping a couple evenings with WH will have me engrossed.

Vasilly - Thanks. It seems like all I've had time for this month has been a few short stories.

Lezlie - Good luck to you, too! I was really hoping it would come in AFTER Christmas.

Diane - I can certainly understand wanting to read something a little lighter right now. Wolf Hall looks great, so we'll see how it goes.

Molly - I was waiting until after Wolf Hall before even requesting The Children's Book, lol! Those coupons do come in handy.

    Staci - I'll keep you posted ;-)

  8. This would be the downside of libraries. Darned pesky people want the same book you do! The nerve! I really have been distracted lately, and can only focus for small amounts of time. On the bright side, audios are still going strong. I can listen while I do all my tasks. Maybe Wolf Hall has an audio version?

  9. Perhaps your days will be a little more open after Christmas. From the 26th that will be about seven days before it is due. But like you, I wonder what book goodies are under the tree. I am hoping to finish whatever book I may be reading on Christmas Eve so that I will have complete freedom to choose come Christmas day. I'll stay tuned:)

  10. I loved Wolf Hall, couldn't put it down. I think you'll manage to squeeze it in between the festivities.

  11. so sorry it's bad timing! I've had that a few times with the library loot...I hope you'll find the time!

  12. I am hoping my hold doesn't come in for a couple of weeks too! I have many other books ahead of it.

I pay the fines to finish it!

  13. Sandy - Yep... my reading is slow right now (as in nearly non-existent). Thank God for audiobooks - I'm enjoying Maisie Dobbs very much.

Book Psmith - I'm hoping I can just curl up with a book on the 26th and stay that way for a week! That would solve quite few problems, I think ;-)

Zetor - So glad to hear this one kept you enthralled... hope it ends up being my holiday week reading.

hmsgofita - This is the down side of libraries, I guess. I sure hope to carve out the time for Wolf Hall!

Nise' - I hope you have better luck with your library hold than I did! If I'm involved with the book and not finished, I'll probably just pay the fine.

  15. I want to read this one, but from what I've heard, it does seem long (and slow). Maybe Santa will read your blog and get you the book?

  16. I think this is a tough time for reading- and Wolf Hall isn't fluff! :-) I hope you can stick with it- it's worth it. :-)

  17. LOL I'm w/ Claire; I think the days between Christmas and New Years are some of the best reading days!

My library fines are only 10 cents a day, so I've been known to not worry that much and just keep the book. ;)

  18. Rebecca Reid - Now, why didn't I think to ask Santa ? I wonder if it's too late...

Softdrink - Think I'll leave the computer open to this post, and maybe Santa will take the hint!

Marie - I hope I can stick with it, too! Only one chapter read again last night...

Eva - Our fines are 10 cents a day, too, so it's definitely an option. I just hate having 'overdue' books... weird, huh?

  19. My copy came up and I promptly put myself back in line so you're braver than I am. That's a totally different cover to add to the two that I'm familiar with.

  20. I hate when that happens! Right now I have three books due back at the library on Dec 28, so we'll see if I actually get any of them read!

  21. Once I got into this one I couldn't put it down but I had to change my usual reading style of having about 5 books going at one time and just concentrate on this one while I was reading it. I hope it starts to grab you and you read on and on and on...

  22. I have borrowed this book a few times now but don't think I can give it the attention it deserves so I have stopped requesting it for the time being. I might try to get it out again for The Tudor Reading Challenge.

  23. Curse the timing! A much anticipated door stop of a read when time does not permit? It just seems wrong doesn't it? But I think there will be plenty of reading time in that one week after the holiday. I am rooting for Santa though! :)

  24. Darlene - I like this cover quite a bit...but have still only managed 2 chapters.

Reviewsbylola - Good luck with your loot. I hope to make good progress next week.

Marg - A Tudor reading challenge? I'll have to look into that one..

Frances - I f Santa doesn't come through, I really hope to make get through most of it during the holiday break.

  25. I am on the waiting list for this from the library- I kind of hope it isn't available until after the New year

  26. I haven't picked up Wolf Hall yet - I hope you can stick with it; this time of year is so busy, I've had a hard time settling down with just one book.

I rec'd an email from the library today, reminding me about $5.40 in late fees ... oh, well ...

  27. Dawn - I just received a copy of Wolf Hall for Christmas... so the pressure is off! Now I can enjoy a leisurely read this winter.
