Today's Booking Through Thursday question, suggested by Janet:
The opposite of last week’s question: “What’s the best ‘worst’ book you’ve ever read — the one you like despite some negative reviews or features?”
My answer to this question is one, I suspect, will pop up a few times today. The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown certainly isn't a very well-written book, but I found it to be an entertaining page-turner. I read it when it was newly released so, when it was the hot topic of conversation at cocktail parties, I was able to add my two cents.
Another book that comes to mind is Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans by Jane Green. This was an enjoyable beach read, even though it got mixed reviews.
I thought the DaVinci Code was very entertaining as well.

I picked Da Vinci Code for last week's question, although I concede that the story is captivating.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit to making sure I've read any books that might come up in conversation with non-book bloggers. I enjoyed The Da Vinci Code too!
ReplyDeleteThe Da Vinci code has been in loads of posts today.
ReplyDeleteMy choice for today was 'Blessings' by Anna Quindlen.
I thought "DaVinci Code" was boring.
ReplyDeleteI played ... even though I couldn't think of one :(
I still haven't read Da vinci.
ReplyDeleteGreen is fun, love cheesy chick-lit
Jess- That's the most I can say for it...it was entertaining!
ReplyDeleteMatt- I enjoyed your post on The DaVinci Code last week. It's a good story, but not much more.
Jackie- I couldn't escape reading DaVinci that summer. It seems that was all people were talking about!
Zetor - I liked Blessings, too. I listened to the audio several years ago.
Teena - Have you gotten any ideas about your best bad book yet?
Blodeuedd - I don't think I'd bother reading DaVinci now...the fun of it at the time was talking about it. Haven't read any of Jane Green's other books, but that one sure was fun!
I remember being on page 57 of DaVinci Code and thinking "what's the big deal?". That's about 45 pages more than I would give any other book that wasn't grabbing me but because it was being talked about I hung in there. It did get more interesting though so perhaps I should hang in there a little longer for other titles! Good on you JoAnn for coming up with this book, I was stumped so didn't play along.
ReplyDeleteDarlene,
ReplyDeleteIf the book didn't grab you by page 57, then it just wasn't going to. But at least were able to voice the contrary opinion, "I just couldn't get into it"!
I loved the Da Vinci Code because it was one of the only books that actually kept me awake very late at night. I read it in just a day--I just couldn't put it down.
ReplyDeleteShelley,
ReplyDeleteI love books that keep me reading into the night. I can usually tell early on if a book is going to do it, but have to be careful about choosing the night...I don't function well on just a couple hours of sleep! Thanks for visiting!
