Whew, that was fun! The long holiday weekend meant a full house, hosting two parties, fireworks, boating, a parade, craft show...now I need a day off!
Last week I read//
The Horla by Guy de Maupassant
For Paris in July, look for a post later this week.
Current reading//

Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Books of the Year So Far
In the Kitchen//
My kitchen was humming this week. Besides all the party prep, I tried one new recipe and granted two favorite dinner requests from the girls. This Classic Crab Cake recipe found on MyRecipes.com was a winner - their photo, not mine.
My oldest daughter asks for Spicy Shrimp with Lime and Cilantro every time she is home. The recipe is from Jenny Rosenstrach's book, Dinner: A Love Story, but I found it on Martha Stewart's website.
Twin A's favorite is Tortilla Pie, another recipe from Martha Stewart. Since stumbling upon this recipe, I use my springform pan more for dinners than for desserts!
Around the blogosphere//
- Diane's review of Creatures of a Day: And Other Tales of Psychotherapy by Irvin D. Yalom had me ordering this book through ILL from my library. I should get it sometime this week.
- Shannon at River City Reading had a thought-provoking post - Who Should Get ARCs and What Are They Really For?
That's all from me... How was your week? What are you reading today?
It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. While she is taking a break, check the hashtag #IMWAYR on twitter.
Paris in July sounds like fun. I am not sure I have read many French authors. Plus, the crab cakes look delicious, one of my favourites. Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteEmma - Books don't necessarily have to be written by French authors. Just having a French setting qualifies:)
DeleteI an looking forward to your post on the Guy de Maupassant work. It is something else that I would like to read.
ReplyDeleteThose crab cakes look so good. I have never tried my hand at crab cakes but it is time that I do so :)
Brian Joseph - I've read several Guy de Maupassant stories over the years, especially back when I was regularly participating in Short Story Monday. Hoping the post will be ready Thursday or Friday.
DeleteCrab cakes are a favorite. I like to order them when we're in FL... every restaurant seems to have their own signature recipe. I'll tweak this one a bit and come up with my own!
Sounds like a fun weekend, JoAnn! Those crabcakes look delicious. It's been a while since I've made mine, so thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWe had a fun weekend, as well. Pool time and BBQ with some friends on the 4th and a nice (albeit hot and windy) bike ride yesterday. Finished up House of Cards (Season 3), too, so now maybe I'll have time to actually read in the evening rather than sit glued to the TV. I just started The Rosie Effect (sequel to The Rosie Project) and it's just what I was looking for. I'm usually too distracted in the summer to get engrossed in anything to long or heavy, so this book is perfect.
Still not sure what I'm going to do as far as blogging. It's been a very nice break (2 months!) and I find I'm not missing it too much. I'm enjoying all the extra time to be outside in the sunshine. Maybe I'll return to it this winter? :)
Les - We had a lot of fun over the weekend, but I was glad for a low-key day today... so tired!
DeleteI'm almost afraid to start House of Cards because I just know we're going to love it and get addicted, but the weather is just too nice now. Maybe during those dark days of November... when you return to blogging! Seriously, you could become a seasonal blogger if that makes you happy. It does seem to be more of a cold-weather hobby.
I've read a number of Yolan's books over the years, but not the one above - thanks for adding to my wishlist :-)
ReplyDeleteBrona - Yolan? I think auto-correct got you;-)
DeleteWhoops... never mind that comment. Just picked the book up at the library tonight and can't wait to dig in!
DeleteSounds like a fabulous weekend! Bonjour Tristesse appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteKathy - Finished Bonjour Tristesse this afternoon... very good!!
DeleteAfter all of that fun, I hope you're able to get your day off! :-)
ReplyDeleteVasilly - I did! Today has been very low-key... just what I needed :)
DeleteI only recently found Lakesideside Musings, and am enjoying your book recommendations and reviews. My list has grown a bit since I began receiving your posts. Your Fourth sounds wonderful....family, fun, and food...a fabulous combination.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the extra "side".
DeleteBonnie - Funny, I didn't even read the extra "side" until you mentioned it! It's nice to meet you... and I enjoyed visiting your blog today, too. Our taste in books seems to be similar!
DeleteYou can't go wrong with crab cakes! I'll look forward to your review on The Horla! I'm so glad you're reading Bonjour Tristesse. I read it last year and really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteMonica - I finished Bonjour Tristesse today and really enjoyed it! Hope to post on The Horla Thursday or Friday.
DeleteYum...I love crab cakes..especially the kind with no filler! Sounds like you had a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteSarah - I'm becoming a little obsessed with all the crab cake variations out there. I love trying different recipes... this one was quite good!
DeleteYour kitchen sounded busy this past week. Holidays can be tough! I'm rereading Harper Lee's first this week. Enjoy your books.
ReplyDeleteThecuecard - It's been ages since I read To Kill a Mockingbird! Will definitely reread before Go Set a Watchman. Have a feeling it will stand the test of time.
Deleteyou are making me up my classics reading. currently reading Breakfast at Tiffany's. Interesting as I never saw the movie but will now. I enjoy De Maupassant short stories. He is the only one I always go back to.
ReplyDeletehave a great week!
Jenny Girl - I listened to Breakfast at Tiffany's last year, but I never saw the movie until then either... strange. I always enjoy De Maupassant's stories. I used to read more of them when I was a regular participant in Short Story Monday. BTW, just found your new blog and added it to my feed...somehow missed the change.
DeleteBonjour Tristesse looks really interesting and quirky. I'm looking forward to what all you read for Paris in July. It definitely sounds like you had a busy weekend! I can definitely see a day off being in order. Enjoy your reading!
ReplyDeleteKatherine - I'll review Bonjour Tristesse next week. It was written in the 1950s, but I can definitely see why people still read it today!
DeleteI love crab cakes and that picture is making me drool.
ReplyDeleteI wish we got a day off or a half day after long weekends. :-) For recovery.
Athira - I really love crab cakes! When we were in FL, I tried them at several different restaurants and was always surprised by how different the recipes were. This is a good recipe. I'll tweak it a little, but not very much.
DeleteNow I have two new recipes for next week! I like to have fish/seafood more in the summer, but my tried and true recipes were feeling old and tired!
ReplyDeleteJaneGS - That's how I'm feeling with some of my recipes, too. Hadn't made the spicy shrimp with lime and cilantro since the last time my daughter was home. The crab cakes were a nice change of pace!
DeleteThose crab cakes sound delicious!! I'm glad you had a fabulous 4th. =)
ReplyDeleteDiana - I was planning to buy more crab meat at the grocery store today and make then again, but they were out :(
