R.I.P. IX: Better Late...

R.I.P. IX - It's that time again, and I'm late to the party. This is the ninth edition of Readers Imbibing in Peril, a favorite of bloggers everywhere. Our host, Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings, invites us to read:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

The event runs through October 31, and the rules couldn't be simpler:
1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.

Carl is offering several levels of participation.

I've chosen Peril the Second - read two books of any length that you believe fit within the R.I.P. categories. My plan is to read A Murder is Announced  by Agatha Christie and another book still to be determined.

I will also participate in Peril of the Group Read. Andi and Heather of The Estella Society are hosting a readalong of The Haunting of Hill House  by Shirley Jackson which will run from September 1 to October 1. I just picked up a copy from the library yesterday and can't wait to get started. All the details are here.

Have you chosen your peril?

  1. I picked up a copy of A Murder Is Announced at the library, after your introduction last week! And I have a copy of Hill House as well. Happy reading!

    1. Lisa - I spent the past week finishing An American Tragedy (so good, but a little too long) and haven't gotten back to A Murder is Announced. Think I'll be juggling that with Hill House next week. Maybe you can join in!

  2. I'm doing the Haunting of Hill House readalong as well! I've been wanting to read it for awhile, so this is a good opportunity.

    1. Cat - I'm looking forward to Hill House! We Have Always Lived in the Castle was a perfect seasonal read a few years ago.

  4. Spooky fun! This summer I bought a second-hand copy of ghost stories published by Virago so that might have to come out. And if not in October then when? I ask you.

    1. Darlene - Thanks for reminding me that I have the Virago Ghost Stories on my shelf! I'll definitely pull them out for some October fun.

  5. I always "do" RIP but lately haven't officially signed up. Tis the season! Last year I read The Haunting of Hill House, and I loved it. Such classic stuff. (I listened to two different audios, one narrated by a man and another by a woman. First one had some kind of technical glitch. Both were good!) Ti and I are doing a readalong of Something Wicked This Way Comes, and I'm also hoping to read House of Leaves. I'm sure I can drum up a few scary audios as well!

    1. Sandy - I'm not sure I've been official in the past either, but thought I'd signup for the readalong this time. Have never read Something WickedThis Way Comes... may be joining you next month!

  6. The Haunting of Hill House is such a great read. I read it a few RIP events back, and had to reread my review to refresh my memory. But then it came flooding back, and I remember liking it almost as much as Sarah waters' The Little Stranger.

  10. I have so much on my reading plate right now for the next couple of months; I just can't decide if I want to add anything more. But I hate to miss fun community activities! I wonder if I have any review books that would work so I could knock off two things in one?!

    1. Lisa - The categories are very broad... I'm sure there's something in that review pile that would qualify! ;-)

  11. Yep. I am doing it too. It's one of the few challenges I do because there are so many levels to participate in.
