It's R.I.P. time again! From now through the end of October, Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings encourages us to read...
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above. That is what embodies the stories, written and visual, that we celebrate with the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril event.
There are just two simple rules:Carl offers many levels of participation - just pick the "peril" that's right for you.
1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.
I've chosen Peril the Second: read two books of any length that you believe fit within the R.I.P. categories.
The possibilities include:
Lady Audley's Secret by M.E. Braddon - ready to go on my kindle
Wilkie Collins - possibly The Haunted Hotel or The Dead Secret
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Dracula by Bram Stoker - perhaps a read/listen combination?
The Ivy Tree by Mary Stewart - for Anbolyn's Mary Stewart Reading Week September 15-22. This quiz helped me select the perfect title.
The Quiet Gentleman by Georgette Heyer - because I've been meaning to reader Heyer and this one is Lisa's favorite.
The Likeness by Tana French - I enjoyed Into the Woods on audio earlier this year.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson - because I don't want to be the last person on earth to read it!
Laura Lippmann - Her stand-alones are great, but maybe I should start at the beginning with the Tess Monaghan series.
Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear - it's high time I returned to the Maisie Dobbs series!
Night Film by Marisha Pessl - Ti's review convinced me, but it's doubtful I'll reach the top of the library hold list in the next two months.

DeleteThat's a great list - and not just because we have books in common :) I've been thinking I need to add Wilkie Collins to my list - I read The Woman in White many years ago but I cannot remember anything about it, and it's time for a re-read. Have you read Heyer before, or would this be your introduction?

DeleteThat's a wonderful list. You can't go wrong with Collins or Braddon, and 'The Likeness' is my favourite of Tana French's books.

DeleteI can heartily recommend Lady Audley's Secret (as you know) and Birds of a Feather. I couldn't stand The Girl -- it was just too gory for me. But I can see why it was so popular, and the mystery was good! I'm looking forward to reading your reviews!
ReplyDeleteCol - Your review was fresh in my mind when I made this list! I really miss Maisie Dobbs, but don't have Birds of a Feather on my shelf yet. Picked up the tattoo book at the library sale over the summer. I'm such a wimp though- it may not be for me at all. We'll see...

ReplyDeleteI also have not read the Girl With a Dragon Tattoo series. I've seen all the Swedish and the U.S. version. Both were fantastic, though I am partial to the Swedish version.

Les - Did you read or listen to The Likeness? I really liked the audio of Into the Woods and am considering sticking to audio for the rest of the series.

DeleteThe weather here has finally cooled down so I am tempted to participate. I definitely have a few in my TBR that would fit the bit.
ReplyDeleteYou won't be the last person on earth to read Steig Larsson. I can guarantee that I will hold that title. My natural disinclination toward the book was reinforced by some brave online reviewers who finally admitted that the writing is pretty crappy.
I did it. I took the plunge. Next stop Peril the First.

DeleteI did this challenge 2 years ago, and loved reading some spooky stuff and reading reviews. Haunting of Hill House is on my list--Shirley Jackson is amazing. I loved Dracula (which amazed me), and The Ivy Tree is one of Stewart's best (and I am a long-time Stewart fan--I remember my mother reading her stories when they were serialized in Women's Day in the 1960s). I've only read one Tess Monaghan, but it was so well-done, I want to read more of this series.

JaneGS - I'm hoping Dracula will be equally surprising for me, too! Just picked up The Ivy Tree at the library today. It will be my introduction to Mary Stewart - how have I never read her?? Didn't realize she had been serialized in Women's Day. Wonder if my mother read her then, too...
DeleteI've been curious about the Dracula multi-narrator audio for a long time. Keep hearing great things! I enjoyed Lady Audley's Secret a few years ago--a fun one. I love RIP but am not making a list this year. Don't think I'll be reading much this fall. ;)
ReplyDeleteTrish - I've been curious since Dracula won the Audie Award. If you download the kindle book, it makes the audio version only 99 cents with Whispersync. Sounds like a pretty good deal! And, no, there definitely won't be much reading time for you this fall.... but for a very happy reason :)
