The Sunday Salon: This and That

Good morning! As you read this, I'm on my way to New York City... again. I wish I could report that it's to attend BEA and the Book Blogger Convention, but we're actually moving my daughter into an NYU dorm and then heading straight home. She has an internship at ESPN and is also taking a class at NYU.

On our last trip, we discovered that her dorm is literally two blocks from the Strand Bookstore, and Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers is a few block in the opposite direction! She's thrilled, and I'm just a little envious. When you're taking a break from BEA and browsing the bookstores, if you happen to notice a tall redhead with her nose in something Austen-related, chances are it's Daughter #1!

I did manage to finish one book this week, Molly Fox's Birthday by Deirdre Madden, but am having a hard time gathering my thoughts for a review. For now, I'll just tell you I loved it and hope to be able to expand on that later in the week.

My next priority is The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton - our June book club selection. The audio has been on my ipod for the past two months, but I haven't managed to listen to it. For some reason, I haven't been listening to anything at all! My sister loaned me her copy, so maybe a combination read/listen will begin this week.

There are four more installments of the Wuthering Heights Wednesday read-along hosted by Jill of Fizzy Thoughts. The serial reading of Wuthering Heights seems to have fallen into my short story space, so Short Story Monday participation has been spotty at best the last month or so.

On the home front, end-of-the-year activities begin in earnest this week with the first round of concerts and awards assemblies. Twin A's school year ends June 4, but Twin B won't finish her Regents Exams until June 18. Let's just say she's not happy at the prospect of going to school for an "extra" two weeks!

We're also expecting more news about our retired greyhound, Zelda. She arrived on Saturday and we're anxious to hear how she weathered the long trip and how she's settling in with her foster family. If all goes as planned, we'll bring her home in another week or so.

There will be no reading for me today, but I hope you can spend some time with your current book. Enjoy your Sunday, and safe travels to all attending BEA!

  4. This could be the beginning of a lifelong addiction for your daughter! I can't even imagine living near those two places! Because of BEA, I think it is going to be a little dead around here next week, so it probably isn't the end of the world if you are uninspired with the reading. I am very interested in The Forgotten Garden. I listened to her other book (can't remember the name but gothic old mansion stuff) and I really liked it, even though it was a little too long.

  5. Going to NY for ANY reason sounds fabulous, and the mention of those bookstores had me salivating. Not that I've ever been to NY, but I read...okay???

That's how I see most of the world...through books.

But I was in Boston once. It was a working weekend, but fabulous nevertheless. That was a long time ago, though. Boo-hoo.

Hope your daughter really enjoys her time in NY. She'll remember it for the rest of her life.

I've been wanting to read Molly Fox's Birthday...I'll be watching for your review.

  6. OMG! I am so very jealous of your daughter! I'm actually thinking about going to NYU for grad school. I want so badly to be in New York City but I can't seem to find a job there. Unfortunately, I just found out I can't make the Book Blogger Convention.

  7. Sounds like Daughter #1 is going to have a wonderful summer. Best of luck to her.
And you know what they say about location being everything...especially when that location is between two bookstore icons! Have a great trip!

  11. Iris - We got her all moved in, and her internship starts tomorrow. She's very excited.

Book Dilettante - Thanks! Yesterday went very smoothly, now I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the subway tomorrow.

Nymeth - I already told her that since the Strand is so close, she should buy a book, read it, and go back for another... no need to stockpile :-)

Sandy - I can't wait to go back and visit her! Just found out our dog is arriving Wednesday, so not much will get done this week either.

Laurel Rain-Snow - So far she loves New York... such a great experience for a 20 year old! Hope to get Molly Fox reviewed soon.

E.L. Fay - I hope you can get there for grad school... what an exciting city! Too bad about the book blogger con - maybe next year.

DS - Oh, to be 20 and in New York City for the summer... she's a lucky girl! Yesterday was a very long day, but all went well.

Mjmbecky - Thank you! Other than a couple traffic jams, it was a very smooth day. Her internship starts tomorrow.

Staci - Just found out that Zelda will be arriving on Wednesday - we're so excited! As soon as I'm done reading, I'll be searching out all the WH movies I can find.

Bookssnob - I would have given anything to spend a summer in New York when I was her age!

  14. I know it's Tuesday, but I'm moving slow. I just wanted to say that I enjoy your chatty Sunday Salon posts. It's fun to hear about the girls activities. It brings back memories of when my three were that age. Thanks.

  15. I am over the moon excited to 'meet' your greyhound!!!

Best of luck to both your girls...I'm really envious about the bookshops as well!

  16. Okay...so I've just scrolled down to your previous post and met Zelda! Oh she's gorgeous and looks so happy...is that a smile I see? This is all very exciting, Joann but can I suggest you start buying lint rollers in bulk? Furry sweaters are such a small price to pay for cudddles with your beautiful girl but as yet, still socially unacceptable.

  17. Too bad you couldn't enjoy BEA as well. Wishing your daughter luck!

  18. Margot - I'm glad you like these posts! I love getting to know my blogging friends, so try to share a little more of myself in the Sunday Salon.

Darlene - That does look like a smile on Zelda's face! She's actually coming today...after talking to the 'foster mom' it sounds like this girl is going to need lots of patience. Wish me luck!

Thanks, Diane. I'm hoping next year will be my time for BEA.
