Short Story Monday: "Death by Scrabble" by Charlie Fish

The title grabbed my attention. Then the first sentence...

"It's a hot day and I hate my wife."

My last Short Story Monday post was nearly a month ago and, though I've missed them, it was shaping up to be another story-less Monday. Then I clicked over to John's and saw "Death by Scrabble".

John described it as darkly funny and says it become the latest "hot story" among our little group. Well, I have a soft spot for scrabble, dark humor, and, on a really hot day, I hate just about everybody!

"Death by Scrabble" was a lot of fun. You'll never look at a simple game of scrabble in quite the same way. Go ahead, jump on the bandwagon. The story is very short - read it here.

Short Story Monday is hosted by John Mutford at The Book Mine Set.

I like the sound of this story, especially when I read a comment mentioning creepy, so up my street!

  9. This reminds me of a cheesy Dean Koontz novel I read a long time ago where they were playing Scrabble, and suddenly the only words the characters found they could spell were "death," "murder," etc. And then one guy quit because OMG, his tiles totally spelled out the name of his wife!

People have lamented the decline in quality of Koontz's recent works, but really, his old ones were pretty silly too.

  11. Kals - This seems to be a popular story lately - short and darkly entertaining!

Margot - I was wondering how you first came across the story... suppose I could go back and look through the old posts.

Laurel Rain-Snow - Hope you enjoy this one, I really did!

Book Dillettante - Glad you took the time to read it. I agree it's kind of creepy.

Vivienne - By all means, join in the fun! This is pretty informal - just leave your link on John's blog, so other participants can find your post.

Carolsnotebook - I sent this link to my mother tonight. I think she'll appreciate it, too!

Staci - Scrabble will never be the same, LOL!

Molly - I hope you like it but, even if you don't, it's only a few pages. There are other stories on his website, too.

EL Fay - You know, I've never read Dean Koontz... that's probably why ;-)

Darlene - I've never dealt well with heat, but when you add in humidity too, I really lose it!
