"She held her hands to her head, waiting for him to say did he like the hat or not, and as she sat there, waiting, looking down, he could feel her mind, like a bird, falling from branch to branch, and always alighting, quite rightly: he could follow her mind, as she sat there in one of those loose poses that came to her naturally and, if he should say anything, at once she smiled, like a bird alighting with all its claws firm upon the bough." (page 147)
by Virginia Woolf
That's actually only one sentence, but what a sentence it is!

I had initially intended to read this with you all, but I lost focus or something. I'm hoping to catch a later one. That has got to be one of the best one-sentence teasers!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely teaser. Mine is at The Crowded Leaf.
ReplyDeleteLove Virginia wolf though must admit reading Mrs. Dalloway a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteHere's my Teaser Tuesday
I really need to give Woolf a try.

ReplyDeleteI am re-reading Watership Down by Richard Adams this week. You can find my teaser here.
That's one heck of a sentence. No wonder Ms. Wolf is such an icon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great teaser and such a long sentence too. I have yet to read this book, but will put it on my 2010 TBR list.
ReplyDeleteHere's my teaser...http://westietherapy.blogspot.com/2010/01/teaser-tuesdays-look-again.html

I loved this book. Such a good choice for a teaser!
ReplyDeleteMy teaser is here.
What a great sentence it is!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing this for Woolf in the Winter too. It starts out very slowly so I'm having trouble getting into it.
ReplyDeleteHey, JoAnn! I've given you the "One Lovely Blog Award" on my blog! Thanks especially for befriending me when I was the newbie!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great sentence! Hope you are enjoying the book, and look forward to your thoughts on the 15th. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteKals - The review will be posted on the 15th for Woolf in Winter.
ReplyDeleteDiane - Woolf sure can put a lot in one sentence!
Lisa - Hurray!
Kaye - Isn't the visual that sentence conjures up amazing?!
Andrea - I'm just amazed at that sentence!
Laurel-Rain Snow - I just started a reread of The Hours today.
Sandy - I was planning on reading just one book for Woolf in Winter, but now I think I'd like to try another!
Alayne - Thanks.
Snowbell - This is the first Virginia Woolf book I've read, and I'm going to read more!
Stacybuckeye - You really should give Woolf a try!
Jennifer - I'm Woolf's newest fan.
Lisa - I hate when that happens ;-)
Susan B. Evans - You should give it a try...and I should try Watership Down again, too.
Jake Kirk - She's pretty amazing, isn't she?
ReplyDeleteThe Westie Loving Therapist - This is my first Woolf book, but it won;t be the last.
Heather - That's a sentence that makes you stop and just admire the writing.
Staci - She sure does!
Aimee - thanks!
Lisa - I can't believe it's taken me this long to read something by Woolf!
Nise' - Isn't that sentence amazing?
E.L.Fay - When I started this, I was absolutely relaxed, pressure-free, unrushed, and unstressed (it was the day after Christmas). When a book starts slow, that makes all the difference!
Madeleine - Thank you so much! I'll be over shortly...
Frances - And there were so many more sentences just as brilliant! I may be reading another book for Woolf in Winter...
Well, shoot, I had a hard time with the long sentences and gave up on this a few years back -- maybe I'll try again in the future.
ReplyDeleteKim - I'm actually surprised I made it through this time (what is it they say.. third time's a charm?). You really need to be in the right frame of mind to approach this one.
ReplyDeleteI read that last year (I think). It took me awhile. The writing is very dreamlike.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this a lot when I read it in college. great teaser! :-)
ReplyDeleteWoo! I just visited another blog that posted about Mrs. Dalloway! It's been all over the place lately! It's very similar to Christoper Isherweood's A Single Man, as the book also chronicles one day of the main character. Hope you enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteChris - Dreamlike is a good way to describe the writing. Once I got into it, I really liked it.
ReplyDeleteMarie - This is my first book by Woolf, but I don't think it will be the last.
Matt - I think everyone is getting ready for Woolf in Winter. I've finished the book now and, once I got used to the writing style, enjoyed it very much. I may try to squeeze in one more of the Woolf in Winter books.
I need to read that book! In one sentence, an entire relationship is described, an unforgettable image is created, and a particular mysterious atmosphere is evoked.

And you're joining the Woolf in Winter group read right? It's a shame I won't make it in time for Mrs. Dalloway, but I'll try to catch up for To The Lighthouse :)
ReplyDeleteI cant' wait! I don't know why I'm struggling with my current book (embarrassing - it's only 124 pages and I've been working on it ALL YEAR. ha) but I'm starting this NEXT.
ReplyDeleteI bought Mrs Dalloway right after finishing Mrs Woolf and the Servants but haven't read it yet. It sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWonderful teaser! Can't wait to read your thoughts for the readalong. Such a wonderful novel!
ReplyDeleteMilka - It really was an amazing book, but you do need to be in the right frame of mind when you approach it. This was actually my third try! Thanks for visiting.
ReplyDeleteMark David - Yes, I'll be joining in the Mrs. Dalloway discussion. If I finish my f2f book club selection in time, I'd like to read To The Lighthouse, too!
Care - Can't wait to hear what you think of it! I'm a total Woolf novice.
Darlene - It really is. I hope you get to read it soon, too.
DS - Mrs. Dalloway thoughts get posted on the 15th. Will you be joining in for Wool in Winter?
Great teaser. I read this book years ago. I'm looking forward to your review.
ReplyDeleteDar - The review will be posted on the 15th for Woolf in Winter. All I need to do is write it ;-)
