Some Bookish Statistics

The end-of-the year tallying has begun. I know it's a little obsessive, but this kind of thing helps me access the current year and set goals for the one ahead.

Total books read in 2009 - 43 (may get to 44)

the breakdown:
fiction - 35
nonfiction - 8 (lower than normal)

audiobooks - 12
classics - 9 (thought this would be higher)
contemporary - 32
graphic novels - 3
in translation - 4
plays - 1
YA - 1
short stories - ??, but reviewed 35

authors
male authors - 24
female authors - 19
new-to-me authors - 27

sources
new purchases - 20 (afraid to tally unread purchases)
library books - 14
from my stacks - 5 (this number really needs to be higher next year)
gifts - 4

blogger recommendations - 22

Stay tuned. Reflections, Resolutions, and Favorites List coming later this week...

  2. I like seeing your stats broken down like that - I've read quite a lot of books this year and not sure I can break them down!

  3. I like that you read so many authors that were new to you. As for counting the unread books that you own... don't do it until you're ready! I sat down to count mine and arrange them... I'm very ashamed to say that I have 89 unreads sitting on my shelf...

  4. You had a great reading year! Need to get my stats complied.

  5. This is a good idea! I may do it for the new year, if I can find the time and patience!

  6. I probably need to do a similar post. I've done my top reads of the year, but won't feel complete until I do my tallying (I'm a CPA after all, and I like totals and stats!). I'm feeling tired just thinking about it!

  7. 43. Good job. I have a year end tally coming up this week although not as detailed as yours. Perhaps I'll try harder in 2010 :)

  8. Great break down. I'm not that detailed but my post is going up the 30th. Have a great new year and happy reading.

  10. I enjoy seeing reads broken down into the categories, so don't feel alone in your obsession:) I will definitely stay tuned.

  11. I may have to borrow this format for my wrap-up post! :) (And, may I add, I LOVE your blog header photo! Simply gorgeous!)

  12. Oooh...I should keep track of blogger recommendations next year!

  13. Great stats JoAnn....and I'm afraid to add up all of the books I brought into the house this year that I haven't read yet!!

  14. Statistics are so much fun to read! (at least these kinds!) And what a great ratio of male to female authors! If I had kept track, I probably would also show at least half of my 2009 reads to be blogger recommendations.

  15. I don't think it's obsessive at all. I need a better way of keeping myself on track, especially with challenges, for next year. Great stats by the way!

  16. I love these posts! I always do one just after the new year. Do you count pages too?

I'm at 51 books, my goal is 52. I have 2.5 days to finish up one more, I think I might make it!

  17. Oh! And love the snowy chairs in your header, haven't noticed them before now.

  18. Kals - 43 is a good number, I think. Looking forward to your stats and lists!

Verity - I think this would be a lot harder if I read the same number of books as you, lol!

Saveophelia - The number of new authors surprised me - many were book blogger recommended. I don't even dare count my unread books ;-)

Nise' - Thanks! I'll be looking for your stats soon.

Book Dilettante - It isn't all that much work and I love looking at the stats - hope you give it a try for 2010.

  19. Sandy - Since you're a CPA, I'll expect a much better, more detailed breakdown - lol!

Linda - Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for your stats.

Kaye - I'll look forward to your stats, too. Happy New Year!

Diane - These lists and stats are fun for me... kinda strange, but oh well...

Book Psmith - Glad I'm not alone in this obsession, lol!

Melissa - Feel free to borrow any part of the format. I'll look forward to your post! That picture was taken Christmas Eve...definitely a white Christmas here, too.

  20. Nymeth - Blogger recommendations is a great stat. I had the most enjoyable reading year ever, and it was largely due to blogger recs!

Staci - Don't even bother trying to add up all those unread books...that's a stat that would depress any of us!

Rhapsodyinbooks - I wasn't really surprised that half my books were blogger recommended. My tbr list seems to grow every morning as I visit my favorites!

Dar - Thanks. These stats really help keep me on track.

Lisa - No, I don't count pages. I'd love to be able to read 52 books a year, but I just don't read fast enough - lol! Glad you liked the snowy lake photo.

  21. Obsessive? No, I don't think so! Thanks for sharing this!

  22. I've read around 43 books this year too. I don't really keep track of my stats, but one thing that I've noticed this year is that my reading is overwhelmingly male. Now I wonder why that is. Most book bloggers seem evenly divided between the two.

  23. Tara - I'm glad other people appreciate these stats. I think they're fun!

E.L. Fay - That's interesting! I've seen a couple bloggers reading overwhelmingly female authors, but most are evenly divided. I tended to read slightly more male authors most years.

  24. I love stats like this! I tried to keep better track this year, but the only one I totally committed to was reading more women than men and I did it. When I went back and looked at 2008 I was surprised at how many more men I read. This year I read 20 more women than men :)

  25. Stacybuckeye - Congratulations on accomplishing your goal! I think these stats are a lot of fun.

  26. Aren't these fun!? I want to get to more graphic novels this coming year...

  27. Care - These stats seem to get me thinking! Good luck with the graphic novels. I've been surprised to discover just how good some of them are.
