Teaser Tuesday - September 22

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Miz B at Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Here's how it works:
-grab your current read
-open to a random page
-share two teaser sentences from somewhere on the page (avoid spoilers!)
-be sure to include the title and author so other TT participants can add the book to their tbr list if they like your teaser
-leave a comment with your link at Should Be Reading

My teaser:

"The easy elegance of every movement of her limbs and body as soon as she began to advance from the far end of the room, set me in a flutter of expectation to see her face clearly. She left the window - and I said to myself, The lady is dark. She moved forward a few steps - and I said to myself, The lady is young. She approached nearer - and I said to myself (with a sense of surprise which words fail me to express), The lady is ugly!" (page 28)

  4. Hee, great teaser! I read The Woman in White last October and remember much being made of Marian being an ugly woman, as if women could not be both attractive and intelligent.

  15. This is a wonderful teaser. Fluttering with expectation to find out she was most likely not what was expected!

  16. I have read The Woman in White by Collins. I don't remember these lines. Your teaser made me laugh. The poor lady is "ugly." I shouldn't laugh. I should feel sorry for her.(:

    My teaser is here.

  19. I can see why it's so hard to post just two sentences, heh. It's pretty funny when it's all together, like that. I wouldn't have cut it apart either!

  20. Hmm very intriguing teaser! I'll have to look that book up.

On an unrelated note, I love the photo in your header. It reminds me of those perfect summer days, and the lake closest to me looks a lot like that

  25. Oh man...I hate when that happens. The room must have been dark, not the lady!

I enjoy classics in the fall, so getting at one that has been on my shelf for two years: The Count--loved the movie.

  29. Poor Marian! I privately decided that she wasn't ugly in the least - it's just that Walter was dim and couldn't see beyond traditional Victorian delicate-damsel-in-distress beauty. His loss :P

  34. Oh HAHAAHA, I read this book a few months ago and was totally sold on Wilkie Collins. His writing is so funny. If you like this one you'd enjoy Armadale too, there are some simalarly comic moments and interesting females in that. Are you joining Savidge Reads' Sensation Season? http://savidgereads.wordpress.com/the-sensation-season/
