It's Beginning to Hurt by James Lasdun

There wasn't going to be a Short Story Monday post this week, but then I visited Dawn at She is Too Fond of Books and found her review of It's Beginning to Hurt: Stories by James Lasdun. Her words were enough to convince me to add this collection to my library list, but then she included this link to the title story.
It's only two pages long, but so compelling. There's a phone conversation with the wife, a former lover's funeral, and some salmon. I loved it! If you take a moment to read it, let me know what you think.

Are you familiar with James Lasdun? He has also written two novels, as well collections of short stories and poetry. Lasdun was born in London and currently resides in upstate New York.

Thanks, Dawn, for introducing me to a new author. I'm looking forward to reading the entire collection.

  1. I'm so glad you downloaded the title story, JoAnn. Isn't Lasdun's writing exquisite ... he doesn't have one extra word, they're all carefully chosen.

The collection is really fantastic. My favorite story is "The Woman at the Window" which gives the perspective of both the man and woman in the story.

Thanks for linking to my review!

  4. I just read it as I have my first morning coffee. I was stunned with the power of these few words-"It's beginnng to hurt..." And the end is so effective. I still have a lump in my throat...
Thank you so much for sharing, JoAnn!

Book Psmith - Lasdun is a new author to me, too. Can't wait to read more from this collection. Hope you enjoy the story!

Staci - It's amazing how much he managed to fit into two short pages!

Ivy - Those few words were the best part! I'm so glad you liked the story.
