Booking Through Thursday - HOT!

Today's question:

Now that summer is here (in the northern hemisphere, anyway), what is the most “Summery” book you can think of? The one that captures the essence of summer for you?

(I’m not asking for you to list your ideal “beach reading,” you understand, but the book that you can read at any time of year but that evokes “summer.”)

My answer:
Today's question didn't require a lot of thinking, since I recently finished a book that says "summer" like no other.  If long, lazy days on Cape Cod appeals to you, check this out:

by George Howe Colt

My review can be found here.

Thinking about summer reading also takes me back to my childhood. I can a see myself, as an 8 or 9 year old curled up on the couch or outside on a lawn chair, reading Key to The Treasure by Peggy Parish, Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers, Charlotte's Web, Black Beauty, and, of course, Harriet the Spy. Those books, to this day, remind me of summer.

What book says 'summer' to you?  Read more responses at today's Booking Through Thursday.

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog! Your choices sound lovely. I've enjoyed BTT this week but it has made me want to go and sit in my garden and read rather than doing any work!

  2. I like the sound of that book very much, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available in my local library. Another one for the amazon wishlist...

  4. The Big House sounds great...would love to spend some lazy days on Cape Cod!! Summer reading takes me back to when I was young and would ride my bike to the library, load up with Nancy Drew books, ride home, hide from my mom (to avoid chores) and read my books until dinner time!!

  5. That does sound very much like a summer read! Nothing beats those summer days as a kid when you could read all day long under some sort of quasi-tent. No errands, no cleaning, no cooking...sigh.

  6. I found myself perusing this chick lit type of summer romance novel. Ha! Never says never! It's called Scenic Route.

For me summer is usually the time when I read a lot of mysteries. I've got Rebecca, The Moonstone and few others lined up. It's also the season for arm chair travel books.

  13. Thanks for visiting my blog! I've read Black Beauty, of course, but none of the others. I did read other YA mystery series such as the Three Detectives, Hardy Boys, and a lot of Enid Blyton.

  14. Mervih - I think Black Beauty is one of those books you just can't get through childhood without reading...often multiple times!
