My trip to the library yielded exclusively non-fiction titles this week! I enjoy reading non-fiction and, prior to this year, usually had one in progress at all times to complement the current novel. Lately short stories (and the occasional essay) seem to have filled the nonfiction slot, but I'll be rectifying that this month.

My short story reading has lead to the discovery of two new writers (so far) - Tillie Olsen and Susan Glaspell (author of A Jury of Her Peers). BookPsmith pointed me to this book via Dovegreyreader. So far, it looks like a book I'll want to return to over often...and may end up purchasing!

I love the cover of The Big House and the Amazon summary has me very interested. I'll wait for your review to see what you think. I saw A Jury of Her Peers at Borders this weekend and came this close to buying it but wanted to be more sure before shelling out $30. Great loot...happy reading!

Those tbr piles sure have a way of getting out of control, but I think A Jury of Her Peers would be a good addition!

ReplyDeleteThe Big House is a fantastic memoir! We used to go to my grandparents "camp" on a lake in NH every summer, and I so connected with George Howe Colt's description of how everything in the house stayed the same year after year. Of course, their cottage was a huge rambling mansion near the Cape, but the sentiment was the same :)

That's a fascinating set of books. I really want to read A Jury of Her Peers, but alas my library hasn't invested in a copy. I do have books by Susan Glaspell and Tillie Olsen in my TBR though, so all is not lost!
ReplyDeleteFleurfisher - My library didn't have a copy either, but I managed to get this one through inter-library loan. I really like the stories by Glaspell and Olsen, and am looking forward to discovering more 'new' authors!
ReplyDeleteI'm slowly making my way through A jury of her peers now. It is a book that I purchased because I know I'll return to it often. It's really interesting to see the lives of these early American women writers especially.
