March Reading Wrap-Up and a List of April Possibilities

Hello, friends. Spring is certainly here, but the for the past week we've been experiencing summer-like late afternoon and early evening storms. They're fairly brief  and we desperately need the rain, but they've foiled plans to meet friends for cocktail hour on the beach the past couple of days! I still managed to get in my sunset walks though.

Tomorrow we celebrate both Easter and our daughter's birthday. It should be a fairly low-key day since it'll just be the three of us, but we have a trip to Orlando planned for the following week.

On the reading front, March was another slow month. I finished three books, but continue to keep pace with the War and Peace  slow read.

BOOKS READ IN MARCH

The Reservation by Rebecca Kauffman
literary fiction, my thoughts, ⭐⭐⭐⭐

historical fiction, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lake Effect by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
literary fiction, book club selection. my thoughts, ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

ONGOING SLOW READ

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

This is a chapter-a day slow read with Footnotes & Tangents. As of April 1 I have read 403 of 1350 pages (30%) and am enjoying it more than I'd expected.

APRIL READING POSSIBILITIES

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai (in progress, 33% )
Snow in April by Rosamunde Pilcher
Good People by Patmeena Sabit
And I hope to fit in a nonfiction selection, too...

How was your March reading? What was your favorite book?

  1. Lovely photo of that sky! I need to start heading out to our bluff to get some sunset photos now that it's staying lighter later. And, it's not freezing cold or windy!

I don't think I've read Snow in April. I believe it's one of her shorter novellas, which I tend to not like nearly as well as her longer stories. You can let us know if it's worthwhile.

Good People is getting good press and I've added it to my list to look for at the library. Or maybe on audio, although it sounds like it could be a bit confusing as it's "told through a kaleidoscope of perspectives."

My reading in March was quite good! Two books with 4.5/5 ratings, two with 4/5, and the others were 3/5. I did give up on The Emperor of All Maladies after over a hundred pages. It's very interesting, but a bit of a slog.

    Happy Easter, JoAnn!

    1. Les - I really love PIlcher's longer novels and haven't found her short ones to be quite as good. Still, I always enjoy spending time in her world. Good People may be a good as a read/listen combination... hoping to get to it in April, but may have to push it to May. Glad you had such a good reading month in March and i'll look forward to some spring sunset photos!

    1. Amy - Sonia and Sonny will take me a while to finish, but I am looking forward to Good People. If I can't get to it this month, I'll add it to my May list.

  3. I'm glad you are getting in your walks at sunset. It's one of the delights of living where you do.

And it's great that you are continuing to enjoy the latest volumes of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion.

    1. Deb - I've loved the Emma M. Lion series and am dragging my heels in starting volume 8. I don't ant them to be over! Volume 9 is supposed to be released later this year, but I haven't seen a pub date yet.

  5. My reading has been slow. Things going on here, allergies, just...life stuff, you know. Lake Effect needs to go on my list. I had won a coupe of books recently and need to get on those soon.

My blogging and visiting has been sparse!

    1. Tina - Hope your allergies are better this week. Congrats on the book wins... goodreads giveaways? Last year I won a couple in pretty quick succession.

  6. Happy Easter and happy birthday to your daughter!

  7. Florida sunsets are stunning! In Santa Barbara, our beaches face south (this confuses everyone!) so sunsets are seen at an odd angle

    1. Helen - When we sold our condo here and bought a house, we chose it with sunsets in mind. They are visible all year long on this part of the island!

  8. I hope you have a nice time in Orlando. Are you still liking Sonia & Sunny? If so, I'll have to get to it sometime. It looks like the novel Good People is coming in for me this week at the library ... so I'm keen to read that sometime soon. I hope it's good. Cheers & Happy Easter.

    1. Susan - I really am enjoying Sonia and Sunny. It is very long, detailed, and immersive... and the writing is SO good. No wonder it took her ten years to finish! Approaching the 50% mark now.

  9. I didn't realize War and Peace was such a long book! Hope you continue to enjoy it. Hope you're able to get your cocktail meetup soon! Have a wonderful week!

    1. Rachel - War and Peace is long, but the chapters are on the short side. Reading one per day is manageable! We finally gave up on planning cocktails on the beach and had our friends at the house last night, lol!

  12. I hope you had a happy Easter and your daughter had a wonderful birthday. It is getting warmer here but it feels like the weather keeps forgetting that it's supposed to be warmer and then gets warm again and repeat. I think everyone I know has a cold! All of your books look good. I'm really looking forward to reading the Emma Lion books. They all sound wonderful. I hope you have a wonderful week!

    1. Katherine - We had a very nice easter and Ellen really enjoyed her birthday... a real double celebration day! The weather has been kind of odd all winter here... much colder than normal, then hotter than normal, and now we've been rainy and cool for a couple of days again. It sounds like we'll be back to the heat by this weekend. I may not finish many books again in April because Sonia and Sonny is so long. It's a good read though. Hope you're having a good week!
